We had a room with a separate bathroom - it's the only one, the other rooms come with ensuite bathrooms - which was alright and overall didn't really bother us, but is something to take note of when booking a room. Also, the mattress only gets a B- for comfort. It's alright, but not the best. Overall I can wholeheartedly recommend the trout fly to just about anybody looking for a good stay on islay.

We had a great time at the Trout Fly Guesthouse. It was clean, the Rooms look really nice and are well equipped, the Bathrooms are modern and roomy and the hosts are just great people all around. The trout fly is located in the middle of Port Ellen, close to some good Restaurants and bars and the 4 (soon to be 5) southern distilleries on islay. The price per night is (as anywhere on islay) not exactly cheap, but since it includes a phenomenal breakfast I'd say it's pretty fair and might even be the best value for money you're going to get on the island.

The mistake I made - booked too short a stay on Islay

Location is perfect, especially if traveling with public transport, near the port, near the restaurant, and a minute from the bus station. Room we stayed in is beautiful and the whole property is nicely decorated and cozy. And the breakfast was exceptional - both savory and sweet :) But above all it is the host that made our stay unforgettable and delightful as it was. Niall, thank you for everything :)

Great B+B in the centre of Port Ellen. Great breakfast. I really felt like they made sure we got the most out of our stay by great communication beforehand advising us to book the local restaurants and distillery tours in advance. The bathroom was a great size and private.

Our host Niall went out of his way to make our work trip a success after we had a problem with a change of dates. He is also a fount of knowledge regarding all things Islay. Great breakfast to set us up for the day.

The Trout Fly Guest House is the perfect accommodation when visiting Islay. The facilities were clean and comfortable, the breakfast each morning was delicious and the whole atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

This is the second time staying in one of Nialls guest houses. Amazing service again and the breakfast was delicious 😋 absolutely love visiting islay and staying at The Trout Fly made out trip even more relaxing. Would highly recommend this beautiful little guest house. Can't wait to go back.

I had the Ardbeg room with separate bathroom, but the bathroom was huge and modern - great to shower in. The bed was nice and comfortable and big although a bit firm,. The breakfast was huge, so bring an appetite.

Niall and Linda are very outstanding host couples and Niall gives me the best hospitality experience from the time I arrive and tell me what I need to spend best of my 4-day in Islay. Niall cooks a very exceptional fine Scottish breakfast and the final day he helps me to plan the itinerary. Niall walks extra miles to help the guests. All the best to Niall and Linda.

Nothing at all, it was just perfect.

Niall and his family were exceptional hosts. The (vegetarian) breakfast was wonderful, the rooms were cozy and decorated with passion and the bathroom was modern, bright and clean. We felt very welcome in the Trout Fly Guesthouse and had the most wonderful and relaxed time. Our host Niall even saved our day of departure. If we have the chance, we'll be back for sure!

Guests should know the rooms and beds are small, and there is little room for large suitcases nor dresser space for longer stays.

Niall provides an intimate and personal stay in a charming and cozy house. I highly recommend the waffles at breakfast. The inn is located right on the main street in Port Ellen, convenient to the ferry and the airport.
