An extractor fan needs to be fitted in the bathroom as there is no window there.

Very nice suite away from main hotel building so very quiet. We only noticed the following day that we could have had more or less individual parking right outside our room.

    Can't think of anything really.

We booked a one night stay here to break up a long journey to Scotland. It was a lovely quiet location not far from Barnard Castle and just off the A66. It has a lovely old world charm to the place and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We had a very generous sized room (we travelled with our small dog) so it was great to be able to spread out. The bar was open when we arrived and we took advantage of the facility for a night cap. The barman was so friendly and helpful, told us about the history of the building and made a fuss of our dog. We were sorry that we were only here for one night really.

Had to change my original room due to smell of fat from extractor outside window. Next bedroom was ok except for crumbs or at least I think they were on duvet and blood stains on main sheet that had obviously not come out in wash previously. Mould around bath and hole where broken tile had come away. Evening meal had your Berger which was so hard and couldn’t eat it and wine overpriced. Had massage in Spa which was totally inadequate. Paid for neck and back 25 mins. It certainly didn’t last that long ( checked watch ) and my neck wasn’t touched. All in all a very dissatisfying session and again certainly not worth it

    Set in beautiful location

Some parts of the hotel are now in need of some TLC, in particular the bathrooms. They were perfectly clean and serviceable but in need of modernisation and repairs.

Very characterful property with lots of history. In some ways it was a little tired and in need of some TLC but this didn’t detract from our stay. Beautiful gardens.

The beds had a wooden foot, so a little uncomfortable for very tall people who like to hang their toes over the edge of the bed.

The location is really convenient for travel and there are lovely walks from outside the door. The staff are exceptionally warm and friendly. There is a lovely pub garden too.

Could potentially be noisy if there was a wedding or function which went on very late, but otherwise good for a short stay.

Our room at the back was good and away from traffic noise from A road, which was good. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious so very happy and staff friendly and efficient. We loved the bar area which had lots of character and meals taken were excellent and not over-priced. Would stay again.

Other hotels with Spas have included free access to the Spa Facilities, charges have only been made for treatments.

Rooms good value for money could do with an update. I had a small double very small it had everything I needed

It was in a good location. Off a main road, but outside Barnard Castle itself. You would need to drive. Hotel is popular wedding destination so check before you arrive to make sure there is no Wedding taking place during your stay - unless you’re invited of course!

Bathroom room was not clean properly. There is no air-conditioning, which make it so hot during August. Window locks was so hard to open. Carpet looks old. Beds are small.

Could do with a bit of updating, painting etc. Could do with a lighter duvet during this hot weather.

In an ideal location for a stop halfway between Scotland and Suffolk. Best breakfast cup of tea in a hotel ever. Lovely waitress! Fabulous beer garden and great beer! Fan, iron and ironing board supplied which is useful. Check-in and checkout straightforward.

We stayed the night of a wedding party. The staff told us about this when we arrived and asked if we'd like to eat in the restaurant as opposed to the bar where we had booked as most of the party were in the bar. This was fine and we enjoyed our meal. We had a lovely stay at the hotel and would love to stay again on our way home from The Highlands. We do however have two gripes mainly connected to the room we were placed in. We thought initially that we had been placed in the room not to be affected by the wedding. It would have been nice to have been warned in advance that there was a wedding party the night we were staying. The hotel was definitely busy and it is obvious that some guests will end up worse for wear, our room just happened to be on the other side of the wall to one such guest! That and the fact that their fan, we think, was rumbling through the wall untill they returned to their room at midnight when the party finished made it hard to sleep after eight hours driving. As drinks were being served through the night so was the ice, the supply for which we can only assume was housed in a freezer below our room and topped up half hourly. All this could have been avoided if we'd been placed in a different room or been told that an event was taking place so we could have booked another night. The fan on continuous for seven hours presumably just had an override switch flicked! I'm not sure how the hotel could control that apart from repositioning it which would be costly. Especially as it might never happen again! We just slept at the foot of the bed instead!

We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist who gave us the details we would need for our stay. Our room had a lovely big and comfortable bed and had nice decor, in keeping with the hotel. The bathroom was clean. Our evening meal was tasty and we were served by a very friendly young lady. Breakfast was equally as nice and again friendly staff were there to guide us through.

We were disappointed with the rooms given in the annex, particularly the cleanliness (there was dust on surfaces, dried coffee granules on the bedside table, stains and dirt on the carpet which didn't look hoovered).

The staff were lovely, helpful and friendly. The beds were comfortable and the location even though next to a main road felt peaceful.

Bar area was dirty looking and had a very strange smell. Bedroom carpet had clumps of what looked like dogs hair on it and there was a peanut on the floor at the foot of the bed.

Location was very nice. Restaurant served very nice food in an ambient atmosphere. Bed was very comfortable and room had a lovely view over a pretty garden. Staff were very friendly.
