How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat price, lovely breakfast.
The bathroom was shared, we like our own. My fault for not checking.
Thanks for the fab review and for the tip(s). Id love to offer ensuite but the structure of the property makes this unfeasible and not a financially viable option. When inspected for the Short Term Lets, the 2 bathroom shower rooms were deemed as adequate for the 3 guest rooms. Im exactly the same when I go away. So it is a slight frustration for me, as host, that I cannot offer this. Great meeting you both. Take care.

Verified reviewIt was an amazing stay at Brendas place, we loved our room, everything we needed was there. Super clean, you could almost eat from the floor. The breakfast time was super nice with some chats & exchange with Brenda. We also were allowed to use the kitchen (fridge, microwave, etc). Many thanks for this exceptional welcome 🙏🏻
It was a joy having you both stay. I also enjoyed our chats and the wee nuggets of pure comedy gold. I hope no more insect bites and for calmer seas on land! Thanks for sharing such useful info for other guests and the great review. Greatly appreciated.

Verified reviewBrenda the host is lovely and very welcoming. Room was very comfortable and no complaints on facilities.
Location. Not much to attract you to the immediate vicinity and was good for a place to stop rather than a place to stay
Thanks for the positive feedback. I enjoyed our chats. We are in a quiet rural village so I get what you are saying about the location. Many people stay here as a base for easy access to the Bennachie Range National Cairngorm Park Balmoral Castle the Whiskey and Castle Trails. We are also quite centrally located for North Coast 500 North East 250.

I wish I could have Decaf tea.
Thanks for the lovely feedback. It was a pleasure having you stay. The rooms have ordinary teabags, instant coffee and sugar but herbal teabags and fresh coffee is available in the kitchen. Take care.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Sorry about the blunt knife I could have provided an alternative or of course pre-cut it! Guest towels are stored inside the wardrobes in each of the 3 rooms. Alongside spare lights extra cushions pillows throws torches sheets and so forth. All rooms have bath sheets bath towels and hand towels, in addition to those provided in the bathroom and shower rooms. Take care. Kindest regards.

Verified reviewBrenda was a lovely host who made a great Scottish Breakfast. She is very knowledgeable about the area and a pleasure to talk to. Lovely views over the hills behind.
Rooms are not with en-suite bathrooms, but it wasn’t a problem as we were the only ones staying.
A joy having you both stay. Fab convo, very interesting. Thanks for advice on coffee machine! Would love ensuite. Costs are too high for small property which has only 3 guest rooms and 2 bathrooms already in situ. Take care.

Verified reviewThis is my second review because I stayed for 10 days and extended my stay for a full 2 weeks! A great home with a wonderful host. Because I stayed so longer, Brenda was more like a flatmate!! I came from NZ and the Cooperage was a very central village to make trips in all directions of the Highlands to visit castles etc. The scenery driving to get to places was so spectacular, that I had to stop often to take photos! My room was large, a comfy bed, a delicious generous cooked breakfast and I was able to cook my dinner when I needed to. I enjoyed the bath with bathsalts provided on arrival home from a couple of cold windy walks around castle gardens. The rain shower is excellent too. Brenda provided lots of little extras just in case they were needed. I added a photo of a double rainbow from my window, and a shot of Balmoral Castle A great place to stay, thanks Brenda.

The booking.com advert didn't advise this was a property with a live in - residential host. We cancelled as once as we arrived on site and were informed.
This is the bookers error, not a booking.com or host error. The fact double room with shared bathroom x 2 was booked, as per ad and it not being listed as entire property is clear when booking. Furthermore, all messages including the confirmation sent immediately after booking, is signed off with my name - Resident Host. Therefore, again providing further details of the type of stay. This has been the case for several years and is part of the auto templates I have created. Regarding refund - cancellation request only received via email after 5pm on the planned 2nd night stay. I was not informed of the reason for the cancellation until after the event through this feedback. When no-one appeared on the 1st night I messaged the booker to check if you would be arriving on the 2nd night. Both messages sent by text and on booking.com were again, signed off with my name - Resident Host. The booker then confirmed you would be there for the 2nd night. I did everything possible to ensure clarity and effective communication. The fact that no-one actually stayed, along with the booking being made by a third party, an apology being received due to a change of plans on the first nights planned stay and the extremely late request to cancel, midway through a booking, with no scope or time for others to access or book the rooms. Based on these circumstances, there was no alternative but to refuse the request to waive cancellation fees.
