How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt's a nice hostel overall. Easy to get around the high points of the city, staff is very friendly and helpful. The ambiance is quite nice and the feel is cozy, almost like being at home. The added breakfast was really nice, and the music made the vibe really nice in the am. My favorite part of my stay was breakfast hours.
The bedrooms are barely maintained. The floors are really really dirty, my room had some sticky something which made your shoes stick to the floor. There's no privacy curtains. The tampon boxes in the bathroom are over flowing even though I saw the staff cleaning the bathrooms daily. The sink setup is awful!!- would be great to move the paper towels to between the 2 sinks and the trash can to outside the bathroom door. The jam up trying to was your hands while others are trying to brush teeth, wash face, do make up etc is HORRENDOUS. Putting up a make-up mirror area outside the bathroom with a shelf would be a game changer! Just some ideas. The hot water is iffy, and takes a long long time to come up, but not much can be done there I take it- so cold showers on occasion (or almost your whole stay) it is! While I understand people are traveling and checking in whenever they arrive, it would be really considerate if people checking in after 10pm would be made to unpack the following day. Perhaps they are made to take just bare necessities out, and leave their bags in the holding area until the morning... My room had multiple people check in late into the night, which was extremely disruptive, one person even unpacked allllll her luggage- it was past 1am!!! So even though there's a quiet hours posting, it's only enforced for extreme or obvious disruptions. That really needs to be reevaluated.

Verified reviewThe hostel is located in the heart of the city. It is just a couple of minutes from the train station and bus station. There are many bus stops outside the hostel as well. There is a self-catering kitchen with free continental breakfast for guests. The staff are helpful and hospitable to guests.
The shared bathroom is smaller than I expected. The number of bathrooms and toilets is acceptable, but during the peak hours there is a lack of personal space for hygiene for a huge number of guests.

Verified reviewGreat location for seeing stuff in Edinburgh. Very expensive for Friday night for a hostel
Bathroom was not very clean and too small for the number of people staying in the hostel

Verified reviewGreat location
Much more cramped and overcrowded than it seemed via the pictures online. Clean-ish, but would have expected better for a "boutique" hostel

Verified reviewLocation. Right in the heart of Edinburgh. Staff were approachable and helpful.
The rooms are cramped and stifling. Poor air circulation. Traffic and other noise from the nearby pubs. Triple bunks in rooms. There is only one entry/exit to the hostel up a set of steep stairs. Complete fire trap. No access for people with a disability. The hostel has one bathroom to service up to 40 people! 4 showers ,3 toilets and 2 pokey hand basins that only one person at a time can use.

Verified reviewStaff was excellent, very good attitude.
For the absurd price we pay for this accomodation: I never had hot water in the showers. Breakfast with not enough variety and quantity of food.

Verified reviewApart from the fact that everything was kept to a high cleaning standard, the staff really made the difference here. I'm quite picky when it comes to hostels but this place is quiet, welcoming and clean! All of that is down to the team that works here. From the second I checked in, there was a warm welcoming atmosphere that is calm and friendly. Dughall, the Tyronian guy with great music taste (I'm so sorry I didn't catch your name!!) and everyone else I met during my stay were the epitome of kindness. There was a constant good vibe whether that was during the day with friendly chat and craic with Dughall or at night when there was a quiet warm welcome from the night staff whose name I never got but always had a smile when I came in late and weary! Some other highlights: - The WiFi connection is great, which helps when you've got to get your work done or upload your photos at the end of the day. - There is complimentary tea and coffee available. Reception is 24/7, they'll store luggage for you. - The communal kitchen area is very pretty and a nice place to just chill. - There are good size lockers in the dorm. - The breakfast is a great option to have - cook your eggs as you like!
The spaces are a bit tight - especially the toilets/showers, but this is Edinburgh, not the States, space in these old buildings is hard to come by! There's no microwave. There's no lift so you need to be able to carry your luggage up a spiral staircase. There's no curtains on the bunk which is fine, but then you might be annoying people with your phone/night light! I wear a sleep mask and they provide complimentary ear plugs so noise/light was never a problem for me and I often slept though everyone else in the room's morning departure undisturbed!

Verified reviewThe hostel has a great location just few minutes from the train station and in walking distance to all main attractions. I think it is the only hostel I lived in which provides breakfast - there are toasts, jams, cereals and eggs available. There is a common room with 24/7 tea/coffee. The staff is very helpfull with any issue or question. You can leave your luggage before check-in and after check-out. The rooms are quite modern and clean. Even though the hostel is very central, and there is a bar in the same building, there is no noise.
Be mindfull that there are 3 levels of beds. The towels and padlocks can be rented for extra charge. There are sometimes queues for showers and toilets, and very often at the sinks, as they are not very conveniently located. All of it is still manageable.
