How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

Lacked any common area or place to sit or eat. Entered the front door into a narrow entry area. Each room was occupied, but never saw the hosts or other guests. Owners were on-site, but stayed out of sight.

First time ever, someone has mentioned the front door is narrow, it is a standard size, and a large hall way for the size of the house. I'm not sure why you would want to meet other guests. It is not a requirement for them to meet you, and we are not on-site as we clearly advertise. WE do have a flat on the ground floor that is rented to somebody. You could have stayed in during the day to meet us when we are cleaning the rooms but clearly we do not expect that of your guests. We assume guest are here to see Oban not us but we are around if you reach out and wish to meet us as part of your holiday experience. Thanks again for staying.

The room was cramped, with four sleeping spaces. The bathroom was shared with another room, which was not clearly stated in the description. One of the beds was unstable and made unsettling noises, making it difficult for me to sleep properly.
Quadruple/shared bathroom, I would think that was self-explanatory. The description of the room on the site you booked. You can also see sizes and photos. I also sent a confirmation with the description of the room, copied and pasted below. " Rajiv Bhasin Thank you for booking with us. We have reserved the quadruple with shared bathroom room for the 2 nights from Friday 25 July 2025. Room only." Why book it? Then give us a bad review. Please remember this is a room for a family with kids, not three adults.

Verified reviewThe fact it was only 3/4 minutes from the center of oban and there was private parking.
I was there from 3.30 pm on wed till 9.30 am on the Friday and I've yet to meet any staff/owners. My key was in an envelope taped to the door with instructions on were the key was. I'm afraid I was disappointed with just having a phone nbr for help.

Verified reviewI booked the guesthouse online when I realised that my planned train connections wouldn't get me home on the day I'd intended to return. So I wanted reasonably priced accommodation for my unexpected overnight stay in Oban. The Tanglin proved to be more than 'any port in a storm' but a very comfortable base from which to explore the town and surrounds. I did not meet the proprietors but they sent me some very helpful messages and left the key in an envelope for me to check in. The instructions they provided were very clear and the room was very comfortable indeed and excellent value in such a popular tourist destination. The guesthouse has a homely and individual 'feel' with interesting decor that didn't feel at all 'corporate' or standard - a nice touch of individuality. I recommend it.
There wasn't anything I didn't like. Breakfast would be nice but there are places to eat very close by. Initially I thought it might feel claustrophobic as the rooms and guests are in very close proximity. A family were staying in the next rooms and I thought I might be disturbed but they very politely and considerately observed the house-rules about not making too much noise. If guests behave responsibly then there isn't a problem.

Snib on room didn't work so had to prop door open when visiting bathroom
Thank you for staying. I noted your comment about the snib, which is deliberate on our part. We have had guests accidentally snib the door shut, causing it to slam and lock everyone out. Additionally, I have had people manage to lock themselves in, which is hard to believe but true. Thanks again.

“Twin/double shared bathroom” Hint in the name of the room. Pretty obvious. Remember through third parties you pay commission so at £80 per night for a large room in the centre of Oban it is a good price. Thanks for staying it was lovely to meet you.

Verified reviewQuiet. Private parking in lane behind property. Old but clean and comfortable. Not far from centre of town and ferry. A long walk but day parking available for a fee, 7.5 pounds for the day near the terminal. Limited street parking. 4 hour limit.
