Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomVery minor issue - bed was on the small side for a couple. Think I’d book a different standard of room with bigger bed next time.
Lovely settings - clean and full of character. Food and drink was top notch as well as the service. Local amenities are easily accessible, short walk.

United KingdomAbsolutely nothing
This is situated very near to Whitby and the castle is located in grounds that are very well maintained and the scenery is delightful . A great place to chill out. The food is second to none and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the day before I was due to leave for home I suffered a medical issue and had to be taken by ambulance to hospital. I have nothing but the utmost admiration for the way in which the staff handled the situation and I must give a special mention to Courtney who was directly involved in my time of need. She contacted the ambulance and helped direct the paramedics up to my room on the top floor. I recovered the following day and paid for an extra days stay in case this was needed. Ultimately I was able to leave the same day. Within a couple of days of being back home Courtney had phoned me to ensure that I was OK and she reimbursed my money for the extra day which was not required even although I had not requested this. I hope the management team at Sneaton recognise what an asset they have in Courtney representing them . To return to the actual holiday if you book this castle you will not be disappointed it was fantastic even taking account of my unfortunate circumstances.

AustraliaThe food was a negative for us, sorry guys, but as a cookbook author, I am a foodie (which also means therefore I am also more critical than most as a result, and I do apologise for that), though we had a lovely evening overall - and the hotel has a lovely warm vibe to it, we were disappointed in the food. Though there was more than plenty of food, the curry that I ordered didn't taste like a home made curry (I cook curries ALOT from scratch at home) - it tasted very artificial and a little plasticy. The Naan bread was not a proper Naan bread either - nothing like the Naan bread you would get in a good Indian restaurant - rather a supermarket bought version that unfortunately was also stale. My chicken was also way over cooked, making it dry, stringy and hard to eat. My husband's fish batter was very greasy so he had to remove most of it. The Whitebait and scampi however he said were yum and the fish inside the batter was also cooked perfectly. This meant overall sadly, the food was a bit hit and miss. I could hardly eat mine I will be honest and left most of it. I should have said something at the time, but didn't and I apologise for that. The hotel room though was very comfortable and we really appreciated the dedication and attention of your fabulous staff, which was exemplary! Sorry about the food comments, but with the hotel wanting to hero local produce, pre bought supermarket naans and bottled sauces (if it was a bottled sauce?!)I don't think help the produce shine in the way you fully intend! There is obviously a skilful chef in the kitchen ... maybe he or she is just trying to do too much?! The menu was very big with so many different dishes on it and that is alot to prepare for ... Maybe we just chose badly in our dishes. It was also close to last orders, so maybe we just didn't get the best of what is on offer ...?!
Staying here was a surreal experience in some ways but we did have a really enjoyable and comfortable evening at this quirky, characterful hotel. Staff were super helpful and also super friendly - they couldn't do enough for you and that was really noticed and appreciated. The staff genuinely really care about their guests and their work, which is sadly a rarity these days and so refreshing to experience. The hotel was built by a former sugar plantation owner, then turned into a nunnery and it now runs as a family hotel owned by a local farmer. The hotel strives to support local farmers and producers with its food offerings and strives to offer its guests a great experience in every respect. Our bedroom was small but very comfortable which was really appreciated. We also appreciated the little touches. Very much a 'guest forward' hotel!

United KingdomThe kippers were a little dry and salty - I love kippers so this wasn't so good. No-one asked if we wanted our drinks refilled and I had to seek a member of staff to help.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere with plenty of space between tables. Good choice, quick service, I wasn't tormented with the do you have allergies question I was allowed to manage myself and just ask if unsure. The food in the restaurant at dinner was exceptional, the beef was just delicious. Great atmosphere. Would highly recommend

United KingdomHawkstone lager in the bar. Sorry not a fan.
Superb castle estate with almost a mediaeval charm. Beautiful grounds to stroll around (the weather was brilliant) with free parking. Really friendly and helpful staff especially at breakfast. Breakfast was included which was superb with local produce and a nice dining room, you could also sit outside. Nice cosy bar area with plenty of seating. Location was just a short drive from Whitby town centre without the noise and hustle & bustle. Will definitely stay here again if ever staying in Whitby.

The whole experience was superb 👌 From the very first meeting at reception to the lovely pint of Hawkstone. The staff are Amazing 👏 We were treated to a tour of the Castle after being shown to Suite 10 (which for honeymooners like us I would throughly recommend). The room was spacious with a fantastic mural from its days as a Nunnery and a great bathroom. We were shown around and fell in love with the castle and grounds. The food is excellent but prebook as at these very reasonable prices tables go fast. We will definitely be coming back with luxury at these prices and the provenance of Sneaton it's an absolute no brainer.
