Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThere were still people clothes in the rooms we were staying in. Not clothes that had been left by previous guests but a wardrobe full of I’m assuming the owners clothes.
It was very cheap, area was nice and quiet and close to the location we wanted to be at (Murrayfield). Bedding and room and shared bathroom were clean.

New ZealandI just have to be honest here as I think it's important. Both the sofa bed and main bed in our room in particular were horribly lumpy and uncomfortable. In went to lie down and there was something poking me in the side, and it was a lighter that was left under the sheet. I mentioned it to Robert that it may have fallen out of his pocket when he made the bed, which is an honest mistake but also not super great. The bedroom itself was spacious enough but the curtains were not great, as they didn't cover the entire window. There was wardrobes and piles of stuff obviously belonging in the room all hidden behind another curtain - it just didn't feel exceptionally great for what we paid for it. The bathroom was okay, there was no hand towel so I had to find one myself, and for there to only be one bathroom for over 5/6+ people? Not great either. At midnight, there were two girls jumping around and talking loudly in the room above us. I messaged Robert to ask if there was a curfew, but ended up asking them to quieten down by knocking on their door. I told Robert in the morning and he kind of laughed it off saying it was their last night? So what? We're paying guests, and there was no indication it would be acceptable for it to be like a uni house?
To be honest there were just two things we liked about staying here - how kind Robert was as the host, and how close the house was to walk to a bus that went straight into the city.

ItalyWe booked one month in advance and we're notified the day after of a potential double booking on our room. When we asked the owners to clarify the issue, they never replied or offered an alternative, despite multiple messages. Most probably, due to the cancellation policy up to 48 hours before the date, the owners preferred to keep both bookings active and just the day before (when no cancellation was possible anymore and money was withdrawn by my credit card) they got back in touch confirming that the room was not available and telling us to settle the issue with booking contact center as they were not responsible for the issue occurred to us.

FranceThis building needs a serious renovation and cleaning! Our room was full of dust, the landlord had left his belongings everwhere, bed spring was bothering, uncomfortable mattress & pillows, walls were so thin & we couldn't sleep as long as the next doors were awake and talking, the windows were not openable, there was no key for our room & instead it was a 4numbers lock which was not safe as anyone could open it, one sharing bathroom for 3 rooms (with 3 or 4 people in each room); and last but not least, it was good to be able using the kitchen but sadly cabinets & everything were dirty.
Nice staff. Daily clean towels.

NetherlandsThe space could benefit from more thorough cleaning and organization. The bedroom had many personal items and clothing from the owners, which made it feel a bit cluttered. The curtains were damaged and difficult to close fully, which affected privacy. Additionally, the microwave was not clean, and the refrigerator contained spoiled food, which made it unusable. Unfortunately, instead of feeling relaxed, the overall environment felt a bit uncomfortable. With some attention to cleanliness and a tidier setup, the place has potential to offer a much more welcoming experience.
The host was friendly.

GermanyThe carpets and paint-work appear to be from the 1980's or maybe 1990's. The place was perhaps ok for a personal home, but for a place of business, it seemed far too rundown. My impression, was that a very large house was adapted to have rooms for renting. As a place of business, I wonder if any government inspections are required. The bathroom / shower was in good shape, BUT all guests must share the one bathroom. It appeared to have 3 or 4 bedrooms, each with up to three beds. If the place had been full (9+ guests), we wonder if we could have gotten time for us to shower. There was only a small window for the bedroom. No AC, although a constantly-running dehumidifier kept the moisture to a good level; however, 24/25 C° was warmer than I wanted. Since we felt dissatisfied, we booked at a chain hotel for our 2nd night instead of staying at Silverknowes. The "security" for the private room was a lock with a combination code. I am perhaps spoiled, but I like having either a physical key or an electronic key-card.
Breakfast?? No mention of breakfast. The host was nice.

ItalyFirst thing we noticed was a persistent mould odor which wouldn't go away. The electric system was of dubious quality, probably not too safe to use. Blankets, sheets and pillows were apparently clean, but the bed's structure was not. Overall, the building's structure seemed to be quite poor and badly maintained.
The price was surely appropriate to the offered quality.

CanadaSound travels throughout the house quite easily. Only one bathroom for multiple(4+) rooms and the walls in our room was dirty. Our beds were not standard mattresses but was very squishy like a mattress topper.
It is in a quiet neighbourhood and the staff on-site are really nice, helpful, and kind.

United KingdomWe had a great time staying here, everyone was friendly and helpful. It was just what we needed for the weekend, a clean room with comfy beds and a lovely bathroom. Location wise it was exactly where we needed to be, a nice quiet street, not too far to the Zoo and other fun places to go. Shops within walking distance. Will be booking here again next time we are in Edinburgh!
