While there was plenty of tea and coffee in the room it would have been nice if a bottle of water was provided as I used the water from the bathroom tap to drink which wasnt the best haha.

I liked the building and rooms, the location and the staff at the front desk. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. The room I stayed in was lovely and clean and I was very excited to see a bath when I arrived. I was only there for one night but made the most of the free parking and parked my car before check in, unfortunately I didnt get a chance to use the bar or any of services in the hotel but there bar seemed very busy when I was nearby and seemed like a great place to be.

It wasn't that I didn't like as such, but they didn't have a bar open for guests who arrive early, so I saw a few people search local bars/pubs. We went to the Artilleryman( football shown friendly )and Charlie's Bar ( nearer also friendly ) I asked for an early check-in when booking, but not available and there was an old towel left behind the bathroom door. Staff friendly but just a few tweeks and the review would go from good to excellent. Missed opportunity with the quirky police sign wine bar and no bar open.

The low beams do make it a bit hazardous, especially for tall people, but it is an old timber framed building, and this is intrinsic to its character. Kudos to Best Western for keeping it going and maintaining it so well.

Really interesting old building. Stayed there after disembarking from the Harwich ferry so very convenient for this. Nice bar with good beer. We were too late to try the food in the evening g, but the breakfast was very good and cooked to order. Watch your head on the low beams though!

We wished that breakfast was included in our rate! We paid an extra £12 pp pn for it. The rate rises if you pay in the morning of the breakfast. When we entered our room after check-in, we noticed some dry orange-coloured nuts scattered inside and outside of our room on the carpet. We are surprised that these were missed in cleaning as they were very colourful. These remained unsweetened throughout our two night stay. The toiletries were a bit fiddly to open with wet hands as they had the old-style foil covers. We had to ask for more as only one set was provided for a double room. There is no air con and rhe window didn't open. But fortunately there was a fan we could use. The ventilation after the shower was used was poor.

The location of the hotel was very central: being about a 15 minutes walk into the centre and a 40 minutes walk to the train station. The building itself was very pretty and old: the downstairs conference rooms used to be a prison! We loved the historical asoects. We would have liked to stay in the older section of the hotel. But we had a nice spacious room in the new part. Breakfast was nice too with lovely cereal and cooked breakfast served in an airy and light room. We liked the kettle with tea bags and milk in the room. The fan was useful too! Staff we met were very friendly and courteous.

Heated towel rail in bathroom unable to turn off, was hot to touch, located close to toilet, made the already warm room even warmer. Unable to fully open windows either.

Matress was too hard, no fan or air conditioning and our room was close to a busy road meaning I could hear traffic all night with very little sleep

Then entrance door was occasionally left open, so security was an issue.

Nice sized bathroom, with toiletries. The room we stayed in was quite spacious and comfortable and given where we were, not too noisy.

Minor gripe is that because it's an old building, the floorboards are VERY noisy and creaky so you can hear other guests walking around.
