How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewWe noticed there had been some repairs since we were last at the hotel. The parking area road had been repaired and the breakfast area rearranged to make it easier for guests to use the area with less collisions. The employees are always lovely at this hotel. Stephanie who is often at reception always greets us with a massive smile which is lovely. In the breakfast/restaurant area everyone does all they can to keep the food and coffee stocked up and used dishes are promptly removed from each table. They also keep the area clean regularly cleaning the tables in prep for the next person. Its a large but cosy hotel and the beds are very comfy.
Previously thre would have been 2 bottles of water in the room which we would use for the kettle each day and this was regularly refilled when needed. On being sparkling. This saved us carrying water back to the room each day. We missed that this time and would like if the hotel would continue this for future visits as it never feels nice using water from the bathroom sink for coffees.

Verified reviewGreat location to walk into town, yet be slightly away so less noisy. Large hotel with lots of lovely staff. The building outside is impressive. There is some onsite parking too - though is first come first served. We only used it as a stay overnight as we passed through Oban and it suited our needs. We did not eat in, though they did provide a buffet syle breakfast for those who wanted it. Lots of options nearby for food and things to see and do. Great location for catching the ferry to the islands.
Less to our taste was the large dining room and bar area - we prefer the cosy corners with a more intimate feel - the ones at the hotel were too open and without the atmospere we prefer. I completely appreciate this is a personal preference - however, did mean we didn't stay to eat in the restaurant which felt quite large and empty. We also found booking directly through the main company a little frustrating as each time we called they quoted a different price and kept promising to call back and did not. I don't think this was the hotel reception, but a ntral reservation team. We ended up booking through booking.com as it was simpler and clear what we were paying for.

Verified reviewThe hotel was well located, decorated to a good standard and clean. Staff were very helpful, particularly in the dining room. Breakfast was a bit early and restricted in terms of time but was of a very good standard. The evening meal was limited in choice.
As above but most important was the location of the family room as there was no access to a view.

After we had to move around dates of our tour of Scotland, we ended up in Muthu Alexandra Hotel in Oban for four days. I try to forget mistakes, but this one will not be easy to forget. When arriving, I learned that the easy access room (I walk with great difficulty) was on the first floor, no elevator. Tried to change that, no way. Went upstairs, tried to connect to the internet, After many efforts, I gave up, went downstairs and after hesitations I received a QRcode for staff to connect. The room was tasteless, but the worst was that the mattress was hard as slate. No other beds available. We got two duvets to put on top of the mattress and my hips were grateful. A heavy hum of large generator is started up at 6 in the morning just outside the only small window of the room. Oban is great, but not from this hotel

The family rooms are said to be in a separate building overlooking parking. Well, ok, so these are practically a motel, not a hotel, no direct access at all to the main building.

There were five of us and I would of liked to be closer to the other room. The double room was very small, and quite hot. I would have liked a little bar fridge as I carry medication required to be refrigerated. Staff had to do this for me. Over all it was very clean.
