Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIn a room with a view, couldn't stay for the tour so felt we did not experience the castle at all which was a shame.
Gorgeous location, and the food was stunning

It is a wonderful place to stay in all respects. The castle is immaculately and traditionally furnished with a wonderful ambiance. The food is excellent and the staff attentive and very friendly. The historic tour in the morning was so interesting and informative and Aidan’s love of the castle and its history shines through in his delivery. Will hopefully return if we are in Northumberland.

United KingdomSome staff seemed a little new, not quite as warm as per previous visits. Is quite expensive and the food in the restaurant, although good, wasn't good enough for the price. Restaurant staff were again good but could have been a little more attentive.
Lovely place, very nice drawing room and dining room, feature rooms are very special.

AustraliaThe food for dinner was not value for money. My husband got the chicken dish and there was a sliver of chicken and we thought he would have a whole chicken breast, thankfully he order a side of mashed potato…at extra cost. I got the vegan burger which had a burger but barely any salad on it…a thin slice of tomato, pickle and lettuce was nearly non existent! The tomato sauce was a drop. The brown side of bread was under cooked and doughy. The mushroom bruschetta was soggy but great flavor. The breakfast, which was included with the room was one poached egg, one sausage, the vegan sausage was bigger than the pork one, that was tiny, some spinach, one slice of a small mushroom and a tiny tea cup of beans. Honestly for the amount of money paided the food needs a lot of improvement. Fine dining should not mean you are still hungry afterwards!
Beautiful building and the bed was amazing. I can’t fault the accommodation or the staff, the staff were helpful and so welcoming.

IrelandWe only stayed one night. You would definitely need two nights to appreciate this place, so we will definitely be back.
This place is a hidden gem and the pictures don't do it enough justice. I always wanted to stay in a proper English Castle and this castle did it for me. The staff are so attentive to all our needs and nothing was too much trouble. It was a beautiful evening when we arrived and we had a couple of drinks out in front of the castle and it was amazing. They have Peacocks that roam the grounds and they're so timid. The grounds are so well kept, we stayed in the courtyard in Room 13 and it's so peaceful with the huge trees all around the castle. Loved the breakfast it was delicious.

Remarkable 14th century castle fully restored. Property and grounds were lovely. Didn’t stay in the castle but the court yard rooms were adequate. Loads of peacocks about so keep your dog on a lead at all times.

United KingdomWe prefer a buffet breakfast. They offered a tour of the hotel and it’s history but didn’t say there was a charge, we saw this by chance.
Great building and grounds. Room really nicely decorated, bed comfortable, strong shower, really nice products and refreshments. Enjoyed breakfast in the pavilion, the waiter was very good. Our son liked the cats and peacocks.

LuxembourgThe only real thing, but that is just because I am very much into history, would be to have proper medieval armour or replicas shown instead of the cheap looking 19th or 20th century copies. Most people won't notice the lower quality of the current armours and I am not necessarily bothered by it either. I just think it would increase the flair and quality of the place even more if the armours and shield would be proper replicas of 15th century armour.
Absolutely perfect location, especially if you like castles and medieval history. The rooms inside the castle were spacious and beautifully arranged. The bathroom was roomy and matched the design of the rest of the castle. The food was splendid. Albeit we couldn't participate in it because we had to leave, a complimentary guided tour through the castle was included in the stay. The mood inside the castle was great and fitting with the theme. The decors matched perfectly.

United KingdomVery striking building, with authentically renovated interiors. We loved the reading windows in the drawing room, and our accommodation was very spacious and comfortable (we were in a separate building from the actual castle). The history tour was fascinating, giving us much insight into the history of the castle, as well as special access to rooms and floors which we otherwise wouldn't have seen. Loved the spacious grounds with the family of peacocks roaming about freely - never seen peacock chicks before! Service was excellent, particularly the reception, and we had a very delicious evening meal in the restaurant - proper fine dining. This is an excellent place to locate yourself when exploring Hadrian's Wall.
