How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewCentral island location was great. Not much in the surrounding area though so need a car. Good car parking, nice room.
The food was basic and could have been better. Not a very imaginative breakfast.

Verified reviewThe hotel is in a great location, away from the main road and nice and quiet. Tingwall airport is close by also. I arrived by car and the carpark is huge. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to please. I forgot to ask for evening meals but they catered for me even at very the last minute. There was a good choice of food from the evening meal and breakfast menu's There was a great selection of breakfasts from cereals to cooked food. The room was very clean and warm. The heating came on and off at the main times of the day. The bed smelt nice and fresh, it was clean, very comfy and warm. There were extra blankets in the wardrobe if needed. The bathroom was also nice and clean, well stocked with soaps, toiletries etc. Nice fresh towels and face cloth. The room was cleaned daily and everything re-stocked including the handy mini-bar/fridge.
I could not find anything wrong during my stay here.

Verified reviewThe staff are friendly and helpful, everything was clean and tidy, the location is only 10 mins driving away from Lerwick, the bed was very comfortable, the room was never cold and the shower was great - we loved the scent of the toiletries provided.
It was unclear how to use the washing machine/service which we saw listed, but we did not need it in the end so we never asked about it. Also, there isn't great sound-proofing - which we didn't mind, but it could impact other more conscious guests.

Verified reviewSuch a quaint little place. Food was very good. Rooms were small but had everything we needed. The staff is what made the place. Milena and owner David went above and beyond to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. I’d recommend to anyone. Good central location.
Nothing to mention

Verified reviewHad no Breakfast, and the location was in a very good scenery. The roads round there are just as i imagined it, empty most of the time very much like the show `Shetland`.
The bed mattrass slightly lopsided, and the loo when flushed was bitty and not full flowing. Again hotels like these need to have a lift installed to help guests up and down the floors. It is hard going to carry a heavy suitcase whilst going upstairs though care needs to taken when coming down.

Verified reviewWe stayed at Herrislea for 4 nights, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very friendly and efficient staff (thank you, Milena, for messaging to offer the early check in), comfortable and well appointed rooms, toiletries, and a great breakfast. Reliable internet, lots of parking, and just a few minutes into Lerwick made this an excellent base to explore Shetland. Don’t expect the Ritz, but do expect comfort and a chilled time. Dinner is available though we mainly opted to explore the varied range of restaurants across the island. Definitely worked for us, and recommended.

Verified reviewIts location
It was old, dated and dingy. Like stepping back into the 1980’s . Walls were thin and I could hear man next door coughing (a lot) The chair I sat on for breakfast nearly collapsed and I had to change it out. The B&B that I stayed in the night before was 70% of the price and was bright, modern and friendly. I would not recommend anybody to stay in Herrislea.
Disappointed to see this review, it is hard to judge a place on one nights stay. We took over Herrislea last year and have started renovating the building, but this takes time as it is extremely costly to do. Since taking over we renovated the reception, some of the bedrooms, new mattresses, new front door and upgraded the heating system. As for the price, these are the market prices and we are fairly priced. You should know that the cost of living in Shetland is far higher than the rest of the UK.
