How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Slot for breakfast was very short. Shower was compact so not ideal for people with mobility issues or who need more space.

Only one thing and this is nit picking could do with a slightly earlier check-in and a slightly later check out, but would certainly not stop me from staying again

Hawthornbank B&B in Oban is very serviceable. The view from our top level room was outstanding. The studio room was relatively small as was the ensuite toilet and shower recess. It was neat and tidy while the use of backpacks, rather than our suitcases assisted us to overcome the tyranny of stairs. The B&B is well located with a 5-10 minute walk placing visitors onto the waterfront in town. The car park is tight but was quite easy to park our SUV into an available space. Our host Clive and his assistants served up a delicious breakfast. The menu was quite varied. Clive also was a great help in determining the best driving route to Glasgow rather than the suggested google path. This was very much appreciated. The television is small and does not cater for streaming services. For a short stay the accommodation is most adequate. Depending on your requirements the size of the room may affect any booking decision.

Amazing location and facilities- the breakfast and parking was a great bonus. The staff made us feel very at home there and were very knowledgeable about the local area and what to do there. Would recommend to anyone.

Good location : a few minutes walk to the centre + free parking Hosts: Good communication, very responsive, helpful and check out on every guests in the morning at breakfast. Accommodation: Clean. Have all amenities. Tea or coffee and biscuits in the room. Comfortable bed and pillows.

The price seemed a little steep……but actually not bad when compared with similar properties…….and pretty good taking into account the free secure parking and included excellent breakfast.
Lovely old house with high ceilings & big bedrooms furnished classically with a huge wardrobe & everything you need. The only slight downside was that the bathroom was quite small without much space for toiletries. Location is very good - just a short walk down the hill to the town centre. Breakfast was excellent - no sign of “chaos” mentioned by other reviewers. The host, Clive, was brilliant - genuinely interested in the clients and made helpful suggestions for making the most of Oban.

Hawthornbank is a beautiful guest house with pleasant friendly owners , the room was spacious, beautifully decorated, cleann and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious with a good choice. The owners were friendly and had a great knowledge of the local area, where to go and how to get there depending on what you wanted to see and do.

I don't think anything came into this category.
Great welcome, lovely house, Clive made time to chat/inform us of local info etc. On site parking which is not so common in this close-to central Oban location. Free WiFi, tea and coffee in the bedroom, two flannels - one for 'make up' and other thoughtful bathroom incidentals. Ample handy power points ... Nice breakfast choices including lovely fruit salad, attentive owners/table service and the most helpful, friendly atmosphere. We enjoyed our stay here so thank you very much. Oh, and short, pistachio and hazelnut shortbread - homemade - on the breakfast buffet. Happy customers!
