How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewAbsolutely outstanding in every possible way. A huge, comfortable, private lounge and two lovely bedrooms. Excellent bathroom and shower. Massive choice of snacks and drinks, homemade cake, delicious breakfast. So much attention to detail - local guidebooks, toiletries, fluffy towels, lots of helpful recommendations. By far the best value for money and most luxurious place we stayed on our whole trip to Scotland. Our Springbank distillery visit was great too. Lots to explore in the area. If you are lucky enough to find availability at Gowanlea Heights, don't hesitate - book now and you won't regret it.
Wouldn't change anything.
Hi Margaret! Thanks so much for the wonderful review. We really enjoyed hosting your amazing family and hope to see you all again one day, Gino says woof.

Verified reviewSuperb breakfast
The huge number of signs saying don't do this and don't do that etc
Thank you for your feedback. I’m delighted you enjoyed David’s cooking and our breakfast spread. You mentioned the “do not” notices in the rooms. In reality, there are only three, two of which are legally required: No touching the wood-burner. It reaches very high temperatures, and with the risk of burns, it may only be operated by our team, per Scottish Fire and Rescue Service guidance. (With the lovely weather you had, it was not in use.) No smoking indoors. Aside from the fire risk, smoke, especially from cigars, leaves a strong odour that can linger, even with windows open when doing it. We offer a comfortable outdoor shelter and an entire area complete with seating, lighting, and ashtrays. No hot takeaway in bedrooms. A small unobtrusive sign lying flat atop each mantelpiece points guests to our private lounge, where we’re happy to clear away any dishes to keep rooms fresh. The first two rules (and additional signs by fire doors and extinguishers) come directly from our risk assessment under Scottish Fire and Rescue regulations. The takeaway notice is our own simple housekeeping measure, and we have kept all notices as concise and as discrete as possible. We also include a few brief tips on using the windows, Alexa, and the coffee machine, as well as further mandated signs such as first aid points. Feedback on those has been overwhelmingly positive. I’m sorry if any of the signs felt intrusive. Although it seems someone may have missed the smoking policy, maybe we need to improve on that. Had any of this come up during your stay, I would have been very happy to discuss it. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. We welcome all feedback as we continually refine our service within legal requirements and all with the aim of improving guest comfort. Thank you again for staying with us.

Bathroom separate from bedroom, its not clear in the description you need to leave the bedroom to get to the bathroom next door.
Thank you for staying with us, Paul, and for awarding us a 10 out of 10 overall. We're very pleased you enjoyed your stay, as short as it was. You mentioned that the bathroom description could be clearer, so we’d like to take this opportunity to address that directly. We do not describe the bathroom as en suite, because it is not. We clearly state that it is a private bathroom, which means it is for your use only but not accessed directly from the bedroom. This is the correct and industry-standard way to describe such a setup. Immediately after booking, we send a confirmation message that outlines the suite’s layout in plain terms: your bedroom(s), your own private lounge, and your own private bathroom, all located together on the ground floor. On both Booking.com and our website, we also provide a floor plan alongside numerous photos, which clearly show the arrangement. There's even a 360 degree panoramic view available on Booking.com and at the time of this comment at least fourteen reviews on this site alone praising the size, decor, cleanliness and quality of the private bathroom. We also offer a 24-hour cooling-off period so that guests can change their mind without penalty if they feel the layout doesn’t suit them, no matter the rate plan chosen. We cannot force guests to read the descriptions, look at the photos, or review the floor plan provided, but the information is there and clearly presented. To imply otherwise is simply inaccurate. We take great care to ensure everything is communicated transparently and fairly and we respond quickly to enquiries when they are made. We encourage future guests to take a moment to review what’s provided so expectations are aligned before arrival. Thank you again for your visit and for your high rating. Glad you enjoyed your stay overall.

Verified reviewAttention to detail was exceptional. Far better than a 5 star hotel but with a personal approach. From being greeted with a warm welcome to beautiful breakfast. I have dietary requirements, which not only did they cater to extensively but small homemade GF cakes were just beautiful and food knowledge. Stunningly decorated home and gardens. There is nothing they haven't thought of. Exceptionally comfortable bed, things like having a choice of pillow types (from down to regular) made it even better. Many additional features to make your stay extra special. Will return to Campeltown specifically to stay here (and try out the roll top bath). Loved meeting their beautiful dog (normally lives is separate part of their home).
Not having booked a second night.

Verified reviewJohn was an excellent host! Very communicative via email leading up to our stay, as well as during our stay. The accommodations were excellent, and his service was fantastic. I true Bed & Breakfast experience. Our family of three had the full ground level of the B&B to our disposal. Two large bedrooms, with a large living room/dining space, and large bathroom especially for Europe standards. John and his family live in the upper levels of the residence and were available to us most any time of the day, if it was needed. Yet, they left us alone to have our time to ourselves. We stayed 3 nights/4 days and ordered breakfast each night for the following morning. Continental and full breakfast experience was available and John served our every needs and dietary requests. We had distillery tours each day, but John gave us great suggestions to fill our schedules for the remaining time of our days. If we visit Campbeltown again, we will most definitely return to Gowanlea's Heights B&B!
We lacked nothing for our stay, so I cannot think of any improvement that is needed.

Verified reviewWe absolutely loved our stay at Gowanlea. The hosts were amazing and so friendly. John greeted us on arrival and showed us around the very extensive accommodations of which we had exclusive use. Both bedrooms were massive and extremely comfortable. They had everything in the rooms from tea/coffee making facilities with loads of biscuits to even bathrobes and slippers in the wardrobe. Not what you would expect in a B&B. There was a massive bathroom with a bathtub and shower which was also well stocked for guest use. Bath salts, bubble bath, lovely soaps and even sanitary products. Again there was a lot of thought and attention put into what any guest may need and more. John then gave us a tour of the living room/dining area which was also very big. He had kindly laid out some lovely fresh cake for our arrival and shown us the extensively stocked breakfast area and advised us to help ourselves at anytime during our stay. There were loads of snacks available from crisps, cakes, biscuits, pastries with healthier options. To be honest there was so much laid on for guests that it would take forever to tell you everything. After being out for dinner we spent the evening watching TV and playing games which were also available for guest use. Even the TV had Netflix in the living area and both guest rooms as well as an APP with loads of movies to choose from. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic. We opted for a cooked breakfast which also exceeded our expectations. Normally you get one of each item but John and Dave certainly did not hold back with food, it was a big breakfast. You could also help yourself to cereal, fruit, yoghurts, pastries etc but after the cooked breakfast we were more than full. As a dog lover the highlight of our stay was meeting Gino the dog, he was absolutely beautiful and such a friendly big dog. To have Gino greet us in the morning was a delight. I just wish we could have stayed longer and highly recommend...
There was nothing we did not like.
