We were just travelling through but the Empire Travel Lodge gave us the chance to really rest and recuperate after a long journey and prepare for the next one out to the Western Isles. Lochgilphead is well placed for getting the boat to Islay from the Kennacraig Ferry terminal. One of us had mobility issues and our hosts did everything possible to make life easier for getting in and out of the building - all on the flat directly from the carpark.

The toilet cistern in Room 8 took 5 minutes to refill. I would have liked a fridge in the room.

Ele and Jim were so welcoming and friendly. The bed was really comfortable. They allowed me to check out late with only a small surcharge, which was very good of them. The full breakfast was delicious. There’s a Morrison’s round the corner to buy snacks and drinks. There’s also an excellent Indian restaurant round the corner called Taj Mahal.

We loved our stay with Eli and Jim, they are very friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. Our room was very comfortable, there's secure parking behind the hotel, and the vegetarian breakfast/coffee were fantastic. The promenade by the loch is a pleasant place to walk or to sit, and the surrounding countryside is lovely (we went to Tayvallich and Carsaig which are definitely worth visiting) although Lochgilphead itself feels a little rundown in places. The Horseshoe Inn in Bridgend is a great place to eat and only a short drive from the hotel, but gets very busy so it's important to book. Dunadd Fort is full of history, a nice walk, and not far from Lochgilphead.

The bathroom could have been cleaner. The ridged dial for the shower control was dirty with soap scum and residue and there were some hairs on the toilet and sink which I had to remove.

Jim and Ele were very welcoming, and arriving earlier than we had planned was no bother to them. The private off street parking was great. Breakfast was great - all freshly cooked and nicely presented.

Street parking wasn't ideal but we were out late and all the spaces were taken on site.

The staff were great. We had the excitement of a fire alarm going off in the night but the staff were helpful and apologetic so it wasn't a problem. Highly recommend the hotel. And breakfast was delicious, my scrambled egg was ample in amount and nicely presented.
