Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNothing to note.
We don’t usually do the “everything was wonderful, 10/10” reviews that seem so common now. But this property really stood out for the obvious care and attention that has gone into building it and fitting it out. Certainly, it feels like you are using someone else’s cherished home, which you may well be? I am only going on a bit because when you experience a number of properties you notice this difference straight away. I went on the record as saying the building was generally more comfortable and useable than the one that came with an expensive villa we rented in Italy for a week this trip (putting aside the large grounds/pool at the villa). It has everything you need and you could live here for a month if you needed to - it would take me a month to read all the interesting books on the shelf. A proper kitchen and well-controlled heating etc. Getting that said, for context, this property will suit you if you are happy to be a 10 minute walk from the centre of a (proper) town, in this case Allendale, which means you have walking access to good services, a few interesting shops, a good Co-Op supermarket and a decent English town vibe. This means though, the property is adjacent to one of the main roads into town, which means it won’t be rural quiet all the time if you are in the front yard, but there is no traffic noise to be heard from inside with the windows closed (good windows, thick walls). Do note also that this property is not about views except perhaps from the upstairs windows

Dene Croft is an absolutely lovely place to stay. It is comfortable, well furnished and with everything needed for a great holiday. Fabulous attention to detail. We only stayed three nights but are hoping to be back for a longer stay as we enjoyed it so much. Allendale is a beautiful village in a good location for stunning walks locally and for visiting Hadrian’s Wall and all its forts.

Also the host went out of his way to help when we accidentally locked ourselves out which we greatly appreciated.

United KingdomNothing. Loved it.
There wasn't anything not to like. The owner was great to communicate with and the place was spotless. The decor was beautiful and so comfortable. The owner's lamp game was fabulous as I love good lighting! Every room was just beautiful. The bed was ridiculously comfy. Allendale Town is a few minutes down the road and is within walking distance. Another reviewer commented you could walk the other way into town. This takes you down deep steps into the gorge so if you have any mobility issues avoid. No issues with parking. We had a small car but even if you have a large one there's plenty of room to park across both spaces. If you get a bit of sun the garden gets sun all day which is great. The garden faces a main road - but it is very well sheltered by a thick hedge (and fence) and is completely self contained for little ones. The property has everything you could possibly need including throws and a footstool. It's the little things and the attention to detail here is fabulous. Thank you for having us.

United KingdomNothing….. (other than having to go home at the end of the stay)
The cottage is absolutely stunning, magnificent setting, lovely outdoor sitting area, interior is cozy and relaxing. The beds were sooo comfy. Absolutely loved the place, and the WiFi is full fibre to premises and rocket fast. We loved the kitchen and the coffee machine was a real treat. Just a couple of mins from the center of Allendale the cottage was a perfect location for our trip. The owners were so thoughtful, making sure there were coffee pods, a few biscuits and even a little bottle of milk to get us going. Allendale is a lovely place.

United KingdomOnly that we couldn't stay longer.
What a lovely week we've had. The comfiest bed I've slept in for ages, I slept better than I did at home. Great location just 5 minutes walk into Allendale Town. Everything you could possibly want in the cottage. Some people thought parking was tight, I have a large SUV and it easily fitted into the lower space. Great communication from Jeremy, the owner. Quick tip: cross the road and go right for about 100m, and you will see the entrance to the woods.
