How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

There was no kindling to start the fire but not a massive downside but did struggle to keep it lit.

It was difficult to get a taxi, so I’d keep that in mind if coming here again. Great help from the owner trying to get me one though.

Came for my Sons wedding in Cornhill Castle which was just a 2 minute drive away. Lovely clean and homely with a big modern fitted Kitchen. Would highly recommend

The only downside is that the bathroom and toilet are upstairs. A wee W.C. downstairs would be great for people with mobility issues but this is the way these old houses were designed so it is really nit picking. I think it's a great house for the price in this area.
Black Grouse is a very comfortable house. It is warm and well appointed. The kitchen has everything you could need for a visit. And the beds are good and comfy. The location is great, slightly off from a main rd and with good access to nice walks and countryside straight out the door. My 3/4 year olds really enjoy staying in this house to visit granny. There is a play park near by and a swing in the garden...it is a really well located house for exploring Southern and Central Scotland. I have stayed a few times and will definitely stay again.

Lounge seating needs to be replaced, very uncomfortable.
Lovely little cottage. Very clean . Kitchen and kitchen appliances very good. Shower very good. Quiet location.

There were some slight damp marks in the bathroom, smaller bedroom and kitchen. However we understand that this is the age of the property.
The location was beautiful, the facilities and little touches such as tea, coffee, sugar and milk were really helpful after a long day travelling. The stream out the back was lovely. The information left by the owners was exception and really helpful, even down to telephone numbers for the local takeaways.

Can’t think of anything.. it’s an older cottage with character, I like that but may not be for everyone..?
It’s peaceful, lovely area on the river great walks with the dog. Nice people. Drive to nearest shop. The host was friendly great communication, left to my own devices home away from home. Felt safe and comfy. Definitely would return

There was nothing that I didn’t like it was amazing
I loved having the fire place making your own fire was just so good to do also the kitchen is stunning and has everything you need. The property is also so spacious and very comfortable

Very, very little to say that isn't positive. Only a few tiny things: 1. The cottage is referred to everywhere as 'The Black Grouse' a wee sign outside saying black grouse would help identify it more easily 2. I didn't receive the key box code via text, and reception in the area is tricky so spent a bit of time trying to phone the host but got the code promptly enough 3. The oddest thing was we could not find any cutlery in the kitchen, after searching every cupboard? I don't know if it's not included but it seemed a strange thing to not have in place Overall these are tiny comments and the house and stay was fantastic
The cottage is beautiful. Has everything you need and was well situated near to a wedding that we were attending. The beds were clean and comfortable. The kitchen well equipped and the living room was very cosy.

Kitchen was lovely, bed was comfy, living room was really dated and sofa was old, and the 2 chairs didn’t match the sofa, no real big issue, just an observation.
