How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWarm and friendly welcome, interesting and comfortable room filled with lace industry artefacts and pictures. It was lovely to hear about the lace making history of Calais from our host. Our evening meal and breakfast were both delicious and our hosts catered for our gluten free daughter without any problems.
Nothing - it was all great.

Verified reviewThe owners were very nice and very helpful, they kept in touch and gave us very useful info about the place and the town before check in. We loved the breakfast, the familial atmosphere of the place, and how well-kept it is, despite being an historical building. We also loved the history behind every room connected to the history of Calais. Our dog was very welcome to stay with us even in the breakfast room, which is something that cannot be taken from granted and we really appreciated. Perfect for a one night stay!

Verified reviewWe have stayed here on several occasions and really enjoy it. The hosts are very welcoming and the rooms each have an identity which makes it more interesting than many chain-style hotels. Breakfast is very good with care paid to not creating lots of waste. There is parking nearby and it is a short walk into Calais town which has good restaurants. The Channell remains one of all time favourites but this stay we also enjoyed some of the best quality pizza at the Napoli. Calais works rerally hard to welcome visitors and the Opal Coast is stunning. We will be back!

Verified reviewIt’s a small but interesting family run property. We loved the different rooms with their interesting decor. Our room had a separate seating area, shower and toilet. Our children were in a separate twin room dedicated to Bleriot. They liked the room and slept well. Our hosts were very friendly. Drinks were available and the breakfast was excellent.
In our room the bed was a standard double and was higher in the middle than the edge - so we both felt we were going to fall out of bed. Would be fine for one person but did mean we had a poor nights sleep.
Dear Arndt, Thank you very much for your detailed feedback and your kind words about our guesthouse, the decoration of the rooms and the breakfast. We are delighted that your children enjoyed their "Louis Blériot" room and that you had a pleasant time with us. We are sorry that the comfort of the bed in the “Atelier des Petites Mains” room did not fully meet your expectations. As mentioned in the description we sent through e-mail, this room is equipped with a standard double bed (140 x 190 cm) with a memory foam mattress. This is the only room in our guesthouse with this type of bedding. We understand that it may not suit everyone, and we will take your remark into account to further improve the comfort of our guests. Thank you again for your stay, and we would be happy to welcome you back if you visit our region again. Best regards, Nathalie and Laurent Owner of the B&B Les Secrets des Loges in Calais

Verified reviewThe breakfast was o.k. and we were asked what we wanted from the list. The location was central to Calais town and easy to walk to,
The stairs were steep/twisty and not lit of a night, The beds weren't comfortable. The house was very old and therefore didn't look very clean or well decorated,
Dear Barbara, Thank you for sharing your review, although we are genuinely surprised by the discrepancy between what you told us during your stay and what you finally published. Prior to your arrival, you indicated that you used a wheelchair. Aware that this could cause difficulties, we took the initiative of calling you to explain that our rooms are located on the first floor, accessible only by stairs. We even sent you a photo of the stairs. Your reply was clear: this was not a problem. During your stay, every time we asked if everything was fine, you said it was. And when you left, you assured us that you were very satisfied. You chose not to return for your second booking, not because you were dissatisfied, but because you were changing your itinerary. That's why we're really puzzled by your final rating, particularly for cleanliness and breakfast. Especially as you described the breakfast on the premises as ‘smashing’. We are committed to offering a quality service, with homemade products, such as the yoghurt we offered you (which you declined with a reaction that was disconcerting to say the least...). Our house, the former home of master lace-makers dating from 1901, has the charm of an old building, carefully maintained. It may not be to everyone's taste, but it's unfair to judge it as ‘not clean’ simply because it doesn't look like a modern building. Above all, we regret that your feelings expressed from a distance in no way reflect those you shared with us face to face. Sincerity in our dealings, including in our opinions, is an essential value for us. We wish you all the best for the future. Best Regards, Nathalie and Laurent - Owners of the Bed & Breakfast Les Secrets des Loges in Calais

Verified reviewThis is a great place to stay - 15 mins to the tunnel but quirky and very French. The level of attention to detail was fantastic. Our room was set up like a museum for lacemaking with guides available to read. Comfortable bed and excellent shower. Good breakfast with home made touches. Very friendly host . Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Verified reviewThe location is fantastic as it is in the heart of Calais but not to the extent that one is disturbed at night. The food is also excellent as Laurent is a superb chef. Nathalie is a great hostess and we really enjoyed the various animals they have. Their two daughters were a joy to engage with. Overall I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We were in Calais for an inaugural cycling event and if it is to be held again next year, we know where we will be staying.
There was nothing that we did not like!
