Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

David was a very friendly host. We loved hiking the trails on the property and seeing the waterfalls. Lots of birds around. Room was very cozy. David can arrange quetzales tours for a fair price.

United StatesThere are cabins set on the hillside looking over a small pond with trout. Every where you look and walk are flowers and the flowers are full of humming birds. Cataract lodge is a family run establishment. The father hand built all the cabins from the wood on the property and he still cooks breakfast ($5.00) The son, David, runs the business and is so helpful. His sister cleans all the cabins and keeps the gardens beautiful. I enjoyed my stay so much that I stayed 2 extra nights.

United KingdomThere wasn't anything I didn't like!
David and his sister are absolutely delightful and incredibly helpful. The food in the restaurant was delicious - compliments to the chef. The cabin was warm and cosy- hot water showers were a real treat as we had just come down from Chirripo. The gardens are beautiful and full of humming birds. David took us out to spot Quetzals - which we did see. A tour well worth getting up for even just to see the stunning forests that surround the Lodge. I would definitely recommended Las Cataratas- and would definitely stay there again.

United KingdomIf I was to criticise anything it would be the bedclothes and curtains in our cabin, but this would be the most minor quibble in a most enjoyable stay.
An exceptional location. Eating our (wonderful) breakfast while watching hummingbirds eat theirs was worth the price of admission on its own. Staff were very friendly and helpful

United KingdomLovely location set in beautiful grounds. We sat watching the hummingbirds at the feeders for ages. Alot of thought has been put into the rustic cabins. Very impressed and the picture windows gave us a spectacular view of the valley in the morning. We walked one of the trails from the Lodge to a lovely waterfall. A bit steep and slippy in places but worth doing. Got pretty cold at night but plenty of blankets provided that kept us warm. Owner spoke good English which made up for our lack of Spanish. Definitely recommend this Lodge.

United StatesLovely hosts, and lovely setting. Tons of hummingbirds flitting to feeders mere feet away. Lot's of flowers and sedums. My friend was thrilled with catching a trout which they then cooked for us. We went on bird tour in the morning and saw Quetzals up close. We couldn't walk all the way to their waterfall as I'd hurt my leg before, but it was great even to go partway on.

United StatesIt is quite cold at night and in the morning and the cabins only have space heaters so if you are a cold sleeper (as I am) you may not be very comfortable. Once the sun goes down we definitely needed to crawl under the covers. The beds are very firm as well and not very comfortable.
David is an incredibly friendly and hospitable host who really makes the guests here feel welcome and well cared for. It is a cute, affordable little family run lodge. I feel that we had an authentic experice staying here. We enjoyed hiking to the waterfalls on the property and the lovely landscaping that surrounds the cabins. The restaurant is also affordable and quite good! We ate several meals here during our stay. The lodge is also walking distance to Miriam's Queztals cafe across the street. Despite the comfort-related downsides, I still would recommend this place because it is quite a welcoming spot that fit our needs for a couple nights and the staff is just so nice.

United StatesI dont know but this place definitely exceeded my expectations. Home cooked meals were not expected but very welcome. there are also a number of restaurants (more expensive and fancy) nearby.
The place is beautiful with on grounds trout pod and extensive hiking trails (~3 km). It has quick access to extensive rainforest and quetzals among many other birds. the cabins are rustic and a bit small but very comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I am eager to go back.
