Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Costa RicaThe place needs some refurbishment, it seems old and lacking maintenance. Also, found a person (not sure if it was a worker or a stray person) laying down on the floor drunk between the stairs and the hallway. Kind of scary! We were three, and in the room there were only two (2) towels, went ahead and contacted reception, but they were gone for the day (reception closes at 8pm!) We got a response next day past 8am which is when they come back and open the reception. So basically, after 8pm you are on your own. Last night of our stay there were people in the bar/restaurant area, with loud music until late at night (after midnight) when it actually states in some instructions to keep the noise down after 10pm, and the people with the music was actually staff members since some were in the inside area of the bar. Also, the gate to come thorough the parking lot was wide open at 4am! even though it says to keep it closed, at least a guard should be there to guarantee it remains closed after late hours.

CanadaIn the room the WC was not working very well. The water was not refilling the tank all the time so I had to put my hands inside to fixed it most of the time. When I ran the shower, the water smell very bad!
The location is great with view on the ocean.

Location - close walk to town and could see and hear the surf.

Costa RicaThe only reason I am giving this a 7 is because of the location, the service and that the people were really accommodating. The place has a lot of potential, but sadly the rooms are almost inhabitable in summer time. They get VERY warm and there is no air conditioning. Luckily we got help the last day, but the original fan we had was so bad that we all woke up sweating several times the first two nights and we could not stay in the rooms during the day. The internet is also very bad and you basically need to have 4g there. And lastly the water system is very old fashioned and did not always work. It is really a shame, because I think the place could be very good with some upgrades, but right now you can only live there for a couple of days maximum and if the weather is warm it is going to be a nightmare to get some sleep. With three fans we slept well tho. We had a great stay in Puerto Viejo, but we had to spend most of our time outside.
Very nice receptionist that helped us with everything we needed which was a lot. The room got incredibly warm and we got three fans to cool it down. The location was the huge plus tho. Right on the beach and walking distance to the centrum.

United StatesThe sheets didn't fit the bed and actually came off the entire time I stayed there, but the staff allowed me to change them multiple times. There was definitely some bugs in the room, cockroaches and mosquitos. The place was pretty pricey for what you are getting ($170 for three nights of a double bed/AC)
I liked the location, and the fact that there was a restaurant bar attached. The staff (Yanina) was also very accommodating and helpful, and expressed that the place is now under new management. The people were very nice, the location is across the street from playa negra and about a 10 minute walk to Puerto Viejo center.

IrelandKitchen was recently closed, as guests were stealing cutlery, which is a shame. Light meal prep was possible on request however.
Good location, 5 minute walk to the centre of town. Can flag the bus from across the road, to go to Limon, Cahuita, etc. Decent sized rooms.

BrazilI made the reservation because it said in the ad that it had a shared kitchen. However, upon arriving at the site the kitchen was in terrible condition. There was almost no cutlery, plates and pans. What was there was dirty inside the sink and remained there for at least 2 days without anyone washing it. If you are looking for a place where you can cook and make your own food, I do not recommend this place. However, if you are looking for a place just to rest and spend the night, I found the place acceptable.
It is in front of the Playa Negra and about 5 minutes walking from local shops and restaurants. It had a private bathroom.

United StatesI couldn’t stay because they changed the price after I had booked and would not refund what I had paid!
This place took my funds then said they couldn’t honor the price that I had found here, but offered my stay at 2 and half times more than what I had paid, then would not respond anymore and just kept my money. I wrote them to cancel and have written them a couple times and they just ignored me and kept my money. I never got to stay there and they need to refund me and give my hard earned money back. It’s theft until they return my money!

Costa RicaI understand that the room is like that, but as a couple we like privacy and we found it a little strange that the bathroom did not have a door or at least some kind of curtain (this is in room 6). In addition, we found the shower itself a little dirty or unhygienic. We had to shower with sandals because it did not seem entirely clean. At times there were water cuts or there was not good pressure, but at least we were able to shower, use the toilet and sink without having to ask for help. The rest was excellent.
The staff was very friendly, we loved the room they gave us, I went with my wife and our dog, the bed was quite comfortable (maybe the pillows could be a little harder but it's a personal thing) the room had a terrace which was a success for drying clothes or towels that we brought from the beach, the A/C was very necessary since the temperatures are high.

United StatesThe first room the mattress was a pillow mattress which was upside down because it had black nasty mold stains on the pillow side. The second room had a shower head water heater which electrocuted me. Third room after was an “upgrade” which was absolutely disgusting. The shower was cold, wouldn’t drain. And the water smelled horrible. This place I wouldn’t put prisoners in!

FranceI would advise you to avoid this hostel. The only positive point is a location close to both the city center and the beach, the only problem black beach puerto viejo is not the perfect beach for a holiday. It's quite dirty from the nearby city center river and not much sand bank sandwiched in between waves and high traffic road. Saying that, comfort is very very scarce. Overall it looks like not many investments have been made lately to maintain the standard. My mattress was hard as a rock. My room was missing a few hangers and a bed light would be great too. More importantly, no windows to block wind that can be quite high near the sea. This led to a night without sleep because with only sheets and no blankets, if you are cold or sick, like I was (beginning to be) it's very very insufficient. I went to ask for help because I was in pain and could not sleep. The only answer I got from the staff was they "don't care" and "not paid to work at night". I would never expect such an unfriendly attitude. Maybe they did not have any blanquet but at least a little empathy would have helped. So apparently no one is in charge at night, not even for security? This leads me to conclude that most probably there is a lack of investments in staff. The staff was composed only of girls traveling and working (with no experience) probably staying there in compensation for free accommodation (and kitchen, which would be great for guests too?). They don't seem to be managed by any senior staff and are not motivated to take extra steps for customers on behalf of their employer. Finally, the cost is still cheap for the area. But even, you can get the same or cheaper with a much better experience. PS: a change of name might not be the solution for everything (the logo does look great)!

SlovakiaI have severe allergies and the weather created the perfect conditions for mold/mildew without adequate air flow through the room, also perhaps a feather pillow drove me nuts, add a lumpy mattress to the distressfulness. Also water dripping on the metal roof was like a Chinese torture and also there was a cat which would loudly whine during the night.
No breakfast was available, it would have been nice to have just an electric pot to boil water.
