Positive section of review
Stayed at EL Misti for 12 nights and had a really great experience. The hostel is clean, social and very friendly, plus feels very safe. The activities the hostel put on are amazing and rsmge from cultural to hiking to beach to party, and are all optional. There are social areas both chilled and a little more lively. One of the best hostels I've stayed in in South America. Special thanks to Eric and the El Misti staff for being super welcoming and adding to the experience.

Really good value for money, in my opinion. Clean, spacious room and with an excellent breakfast with lots of different options to choose from. Location is ok, it felt very safe, and you can easily walk to areas with shops and restaurants.

No one in the staff I spoke with spoke any English, so knowing basic Portuguese helps a lot.

Good value for money in Ilha grande. Staff were lovely and very welcoming. The suites were spacious and comfortable. AC was very welcomed. the TV kept us entertained in the evening, it had Netflix, Disney etc.

Nothing really. If I had to pick one, I'd say the location is a bit of a walk away from town but nothing too bad.

I made a reservation for a room with a balcony and a side sea view. The room was the one most remote from the beach and the view was the building in front of me. I had make an extra effort, even at the balcony, to view the sea. There were no other available rooms and upgrading to a room with a full sea view was highly expensive. No room with a “side view” allows viewing the sunrise, I wouldn’t pay the extra cost for this room type

This was definitely not my kind of place. I've stayed in cheap places before, but this is by far the worst and not even the cheapest one of my travels. When I arrived the person at the front desk barely welcomed me. I was basically just handed the key and I had to ask for how to get to the room. They didn't mention anything about basic stuff like breakfast or WiFi, like hostels normally do when you check in. The room was a disaster with people spreading their things literally all over the place. I had a single normal bed in a room with three bunks (so 7 beds in total) which made my bed completely non private, and there was another girl sitting on my bed when I arrived. There was a small bathroom with a toilet and shower in the room, and again, lots of bottles and brushes on the floor and at the sink. And the second day there was a problem with the toilet, so we couldn't even use ut. I had three nights booked but actually ended up leaving after just two, which I've never done during my 11 weeks of travelling in South America. When I left they didn't even ask why I checked out early. Is this because it happens often or that they just don't care? The place was such a disappointment that it almost ruined my whole stay in Río, and I'm happy I spent my remaining 4 nights in a completely different location in the city.
