This property is right on the beach overlooking the most beautiful lagoon. We loved snorkeling and stand up paddling straight in front of the hut. The accomodation is simple and rustic but it is priced accordingly. We had no issues with mosquitos in the bottom treehouse hut and were provided with a great mosquito net over a comfortable bed. Cooking meals was easy with kettle, toaster and a gas cooker and a good fridge. The shared toilets were kept clean and were conveniently placed. Overcast weather meant the rustic solar showers were cold but we were ok with this. The highlight of our time was the lagoon tour provided by Matthias. It was an amazing full day where we experienced everything at our leisure. Hire a car or a scooter to sightsee.

You get what you pay for here. We loved not being at a high end resort and soaked up the calm and quiet. The kitchen facilities were limited but we didn’t use them anyway.

This was a real immersive experience of Aitutaki. Location was right on the beach within walking distance of resorts for meals. The lagoon trip felt like we were in a David Attenborough documentary

❌ Two shared toilets 🚽 - not really an issue, they were clean. ❌ $10 laundry fee - not self service. ❌ No aircon, however fan and open air windows provided sufficient airflow. ❌ Rooms not serviced during stay. ❌ No complimentary milk.

✅ Private and basic - this is not a hotel or resort. ✅ Self-catered with simple kitchen. ✅ Beachfront balcony for relaxation or enjoying the view. ✅ Beautiful lagoon and sea views. ✅ Airport pickup/dropoff $20. ✅ Private open-air shower. ✅ Free bicycle use to explore the island. ✅ Beach access directly outside hut. ✅ Huts sheltered under trees and not exposed to hot sun or wind. ✅ The windows are screened only, providing plenty of ventilation. There are shutters for rainy weather (I never closed shutters). ✅ Complimentary tea/coffee and condiments. ✅ Scooter hire available. ✅ Wifi available $5 fee. ✅ Mosquito net over bed - did not have any issues with insects during my stay. ✅ Plenty of sun loungers, beach chairs and outdoor furniture. ✅ Short walk along the beach to Tamanu Restaurant next door. ✅ Short walk along the beach to Resort Tava'e - Restaurant & Bar. ✅ 10min bicycle ride to Tina & Co 24hr convenience store and liquor store for snacks, beverages, or basic supplies. ✅ Children are not allowed. ✅ Drinking water tap available - when asked if it was safe to drink was told that "no one has died" and look, I'm still here 😂 tasted nice and fresh. ✅ Foot baths at each entrance of hut to wash sand off feet, that's how on the the beach you are.

The mosquito net was a little bit old and dirty.. but apart from that everything was perfect!!

Confortable hut just next to the beach, there were bananas waiting in my hut and i got a freshly opened coconut from Matthias :) he is also doing lagoon tours and renting scooters and pick-ups from the Airport.

We stayed December 2024, great hospitality from the start, clean and homely, we were a bit stranded at the airport and what do you know we were picked up, a car was organised to hire - convertable it was too .... beautiful beach, we loved our stay and a beautiful family stayed right next to us ..... one downfall was the distance to the toilet haha 😄 no worries still got there, thank you so much for the stay, will come again ..... Please tell the roosters to sleep in a bit longer!

I loved, loved this place. It was easy to get to know and make friends with fellow travelers. The basic and simple structures, with window screens, instead of glass windows and plenty of shade trees made it easier to enjoy the natural setting than my sister's place at a nearby resort with air conditioning and a pool, with no shade trees. I loved watching the herons fishing in front of the rooms in the early morning light, and snorkeling in front of my room. I loved seeing the roosters wander about.I loved not needing to wear shoes all week. I loved skipping down the beach barefoot to a restaurant at a fancy resort to eat dinner on the beach. The outdoor shower and bathrooms added to the island charm. This place is more like glamping than a resort, so its not for everyone, but its fabulous for those who want to breathe fresh air, hear the wind and waves while they sleep at night, and enjoy the island the old fashioned way.

Cheap, Rustic Beachfront Accommodations on Superb Lagoon
    • Leisure trip
    • Solo traveller
    • Garden Unit - Triple Room
    • Stayed 8 nights

Please judge these comments knowing that I understood this would be rustic beach huts and I've traveled at a lot of different levels of comfort. I fully expected some bugs and mildew and was not disappointed. Unfortunately, the downside of the Garden unit is that it is back from the beach and tucked against the owners unit, you get a private bath but the mosquitos are fierce and you get very little of the sea breeze. Outside seating was unusable due to mosquitos. The mosquito netting for the bed was great and stayed down all the time - however, that left little room in the unit. The unit gets uncomfortably hot and humid and the single floor fan does not help much. Water pressure in the shower was almost nonexistent, a gravity fed dribble. Weird and unsafe stove setup, a propane camp stove inside with no ventilation. I ate every meal out. Not a place for people who aren't used to roughing it in undeveloped places.

I was met and dropped off at the airport ($10 fee each way). Bed was large and comfortable with good mosquito netting. Bikes were free for your use. Best snorkeling on the island (and the best I've done in a while) was right in front of the property - much better than you will get on any of the lagoon cruises. Small fridge worked. Internet was $5 for the week and reasonably fast and stable. I had the Garden Unit, the only unit with a private ensuite bath which for me is a must have. Excellent restaurants within easy walking distance. Day spa next door. Fire pit on the beach. I did not stay in the beachfront huts as they do not have an ensuite bath, but they appeared to have great sea breezes and views with nice porches.

The rugs felt a bit dank, but I'm not sure that could be helped without having heating/air conditioning? The free bikes, paddleboards and snorkel gear have seen sunnier days, but it's great they are available since there's few, if any, places to rent such gear. I was happy for the use of snorkel fins since mine couldn't fit into my luggage.

I liked the entire experience! The location can't be beat for walking from your front porch to the beach for snorkeling or paddle boarding. The huts were in the trees so the rooms stayed cooler from the shade, although there is a fan if it does get too hot (no AC). Each hut has its own kitchenette with dishes/pots/pans, and private outdoor shower. Bikes, paddleboards and snorkel gear were available to use for free. It was a lovely place to sit on the beach, chat with your hut neighbors, and watch the roosters pecking in the sand, and the herons and cats fishing! Matthias offers a snorkeling tour, even going beyond the reef. We had spectacular sea-life sightings on his tour! He also kindly brought us mangoes and bananas!

Ok if you’re fine with shared outhouse for beach cabins. No view in garden unit, but has private bathroom and way too soft of a bed. Overall, very basic which is fine for me. I thought it a bit overpriced, but everything in the Cooks is overpriced…

The property is a little tired but everything works. Neighbours rooster chorus gets an early start.

Fabulous spot amongst the trees and right on the beach. Saw a whale frolicing just past the reef. Some old Paddle boards make the lagoon accessible. Tidy huts with a balcony. Has everything you need to self cater and mossie nets which are essential. We were able to rent a scooter onsite and free use of bicycles Nice sunset spot.

Simple but really nice huts right on the beach. It has everything you need for your stay, beach was great for snorkeling or just chilling and you can rent scooter (25NZD/day) or bikes for free here. And the lagoon cruise with Matthias was out of the world, we really recommend it.

The bed was incredibly soft, I have never in my life slept on something like that. It would need some deep cleaning allover, don’t get me wrong it wasn’t dirty, but you could see some spots that would need attention- specially the bathroom. Would be great if there was a airport pick up even in the early hours as we arrived at 6AM and there was nobody to pick us up or not even a taxi, we were lucky enough there were some local women and they took us to the cafe, where Matthias picked us up at 8.

Right at the beautiful beach with amazing snorkeling, very quiet, amazing sunsets, close to the shops, right next to the Tamanu beach with the island show, close to the Pacific resort. We stayed in the garden unit which has private bathroom and toilet- great. Little sitting outside was nice too. Free bikes ( they are little rusty but do the job) to ride around the island which I recommend, we’ve seen the whole island and sweat a little bit as a bonus! The lagoon cruise with Matthias was without the doubt the best think that is happening on that island!!! Worth every dollar ($150 pp). Not just that he takes you around the lagoon where all the other boats go too, but he also took us to see the outer reef which was the best part- so much life (lots of turtles, rays, colorful corals, milion fish). We had lunch at honeymoon island with a little walk around- Matthias is very knowlegable and since he lives on the island for 30 years he knows what he is talking about- so interesting! We met other cruise with like 50 people at the one foot island and we were just sooo happy to be in small group of 5!!!
