How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Great hotel, beautiful interior, polite and friendly staff. Beds and pillows are very comfortable, spacious rooms, private free parking, good internet and great croissants for breakfast!

Huge parking, great for motorcycle. In the centre of the little town, their restaurant was great. All the staff were really friendly & welcoming. Room not huge but fine for an overnight. Would stay here again if needed.

The breakfast room can be a bit crowded and hectic. I also remember the breakfast being somewhat better other times when we stayed.
Newly renovated, old town house charm. Excellent location in the center of the old town. We love the restaurant. Even when we don’t stay the night here, we always stop by the restaurant when we’re hiking or bicycling through the area.

Very basic room no air conditioning, we arrived when the temperature was about 30°C. The room had been shut up all day so I was very hot inside there was no air-conditioning so we had to sleep with the window open all night but during the night the room still never cool down. beds uncomfortable
The hotel was in a good location in a nice village. Good breakfast

There was nothing we didn't like.
Simple yet modern and clean hotel room with river view. Very comfortable bed. Good breakfast and coffee. There is a good restaurant in the hotel. Staff was attentive and friendly. It was a great stay and we will come back.

Breakfast very poor, we arrived 7.30 (half hour after opening) only one half tomato back in the heat box, scrambled egg was cold and the bacon was burned. Staff don’t checked anything, busy talking internal and not very kind.
Location was fine, room very clean and comfortable, staff in reception was kind and professional. Free parking is s big advantage.

Breakfast was always understaffed, and the waitresses were extremely rude every single morning, also at dinner the staff were extremely unfriendly.
The only thing I liked about the hotel was the guy working at the reception.

Everything is perfect. Nothing to complain about.
Balsthal is a peaceful and beautiful small town, perfect for spending a wonderful day. You can hike to the castle and enjoy a panoramic view of the town from the top. The Hotel Balsthal is situated just in the heart to the town. Helpful staff, cozy room, nice breakfast buffet.

Middle of the road three star hotel with pleasant combined restaurant/cafe/bar serving pleasant food. Simple but nicely-appointed room with comfortable bed, ideal for a stopover on the Jura Crest Trail.

The rooms leading to the street get a bit of traffic early in the weekday morning. Buy with the window closed it should be fine.
Exceeded my expectations. The room was newly renovated, the bathroom was huge, with high end touches and great design. Spacious and confortable

Staff slightly disorganized (room only made up for 1 person despite having booked for 2, dinner reservation not shared by reception with restaurant staff). Winter bedding in June, made it too hot to sleep
Good value for money (booked via Booking.com with free room upgrade, also free parking and breakfast included). Historic building in central location, Holzweg reachable by foot.

Welcoming, friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable, large, well appointed room with great shower. Location perfect for us, plenty of parking with public transport and two supermarkets nearby. Excellent breakfast with a really good choices on offer. We have stayed here several times and look forward to our next visit.

Amazing people welcoming us, they were fully ready to host us with our bikes and all the mud we brought : water hose for cleaning, a proper area to store the bikes for the night, stacked newspapers to help us dry our shoes and clothes. The heating was accessible inside the room to help dry everything faster. Great experience, thank you!!
