Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomWe had a great stay here - a lovely place, really tucked out of the way, with excellent hospitality from Matthew and his team. The food was really good (and the Caesars really really good) and we were lucky enough to catch the local open mike night, which was a blast.

CanadaWhat an amazing property, and what an owner! The stay was superb, the room, comfy and clean, and most of all quiet! The only disappointment was that the pub was not open that night, but that just means we have to come back. The town of D'Escousse, and Isle Madame is a hidden gem in Cape Breton.

CanadaFriendly staff - Matthew seemed to be everywhere, all the time. And always with a smile on his face. Great local pub attached to the inn with tasty food and a wide selection of drinks. Room was clean, large, with a nice decor. Comfortable bed. Enjoyed the breakfast delivered to our room.

CanadaThe Groundswell is a very charming Inn and Pub with excellently maintained rooms with a view. The Restaurant has a great selection of burgers and pasta, including many seafood options. There's also a selection of quality local beers. They are very accommodating, and provided anything I asked for (linens, towels, late food, ice)

Canadalol child said tv could have been larger! Had to compete with pub guests for parking when we returned in the evening.
Stayed in 'The White Room' with spouse and 10yo. Perfect for our needs. Great lively atmosphere (had a commitment in St Peters so didn't stay/eat at Pub) but woke up to a peaceful morning, water view, very relaxed atmosphere. We like independence so the coffee station, access to the deck, etc. suited us nicely. 10yo wants to go back!

CanadaIt’s owner operated (both hotel and pub) so feels very personal. Matt is a great host, welcoming and attentive. The location is off the main trail so it’s quiet with great views. Our room was serene, clean and comfortable. Both supper on the deck and breakfast delivered to our room were great. If we lived closer we’d be regulars.

United StatesReally there is nothing I did not like.
Best place to stay on the island for sure. Good location. Easy access. Rooms are from Beatles songs and are neat and clean. Pub must get hopping but when we stayed we had the place to ourselves. You see they are closed on Monday and Tuesday but the owner Matt is a great host and served us a fantastic fresh salad , Haddock dinner with the best fried potatoes and vegetables. No wonder people on the island enjoy it themselves. Live music from local talent.

United StatesThe Groundswell is self-contained in a small town by the lake environment. If you need places to go other than the inn and its restaurant/bar or the lake, there isn’t much.
A lovely room with windows overseeing a sloped lawn down to the lake. We are picky, and the food was delicious and the dining room fun. Breakfast delivered to our room was a treat. The host was gracious, friendly and efficient. We would have enjoyed a longer stay.

United StatesThe food at the pub was just ok - pretty bland. The surrounding town is pretty rundown, but this property is in good shape.
It’s a cool setup of having the pub and rooms together, with a beautiful backdrop of the water

CanadaOur room was in need on some upgrades but I know these renovations were in the plans.
Matt and his family were great hosts. Our room was pleasant but some needed renovations were in the plans. Our favourite part of our stay was the very tasty food at the pub prepared by chef Colleen and breakfast room service delivered by Matt's daughter Brigette. This is a real family business and each member has a vested interest in the quality, so it's all very well done! We hope to return again.

CanadaThis was our last night in Cape Breton and it couldn't have ended on a better note. The staff were welcoming, the rooms were clean and quiet. It was obvious that the owners took pride in their establishment. It was so convenient for us that we could just pop over to the pub for a meal complete with live music. The meal was by far the best I had while visiting the area. I regret not having the opportunity to personally give this review to the owners before we left. After working in tourism for many years I am aware that often it is only the negative that people remember and take with them but honestly I have only positive things to say about this place.I would highly recommend Groundswell Pub and Inn and look forward to going back.
