Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SwitzerlandDue to the fact that we were the only travelers during the stay the breakfast was a bit smaller than in other years. However, still good.
It was not the first time we visited this place. We like it to live in a castle with original furniture (but of course up to date bath room). The service is friendly and efficient, the rooms are large, clean and well maintained. Really a great place to spend some nights.

United StatesIt was all perfect!
This property is beautiful! My room was very spacious and clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. They granted my request for a specific room and were great about communicating with me prior to my arrival. We were one of what appeared to be only two couples staying there which made our stay extra special. Despite only a few overnight guests that evening, our breakfast was still plentiful and delicious complete with a large number of choices. The attached photo reflects only a small fraction of the breakfast options. We spent time in each of the common spaces so we could enjoy as much of this huge castle as possible. There is a library, a courtyard, and a sitting area. The chapel was my favorite room. There is also a small park area outside with a walking path around a pond. A very good restaurant is located adjacent to the castle. I hope to return to Austria in the future and will definitely plan the visit so that my path includes Schloss Matzen. I miss being there already.

Staying in a castle was amazing! So historic. Everything was exquisite and clean. The morning breakfast was very filling and lots of choices. The WiFi didn't work that great, but what do you expect from a thousand year old castle!

Austriathe porter-figure in the room could go, in my opinion it’s a non- reflective reminder of oppression and a reproduction of stereotypes against POC
it’s really unique, the staff is friendly and the breakfast is great

UkraineStaying at this hotel was a one-of-a-kind experience—like spending a night in an interactive museum, where you can touch each exhibit and feel like a part of history. You can take unique photos, read old books, and gain insight into what life was like in the castle. The surroundings are peaceful and picturesque, and I loved enjoying the mountain view through the window. Our stay was comfortable—the room was clean and fully equipped, and the breakfast was varied and nourishing. The Wi-Fi was occasionally slow, but it turned out to be a perfect opportunity for a digital detox. While having a car might be more convenient, we traveled by train, and reaching the castle on foot from the nearest station or by bus was not a problem. Overall, my expectations were exceeded, and I highly recommend spending a holiday at Matzen Castle.

United StatesNo coffee maker or tea kettle in the room.
Loved the spacious rooms and comfortable beds. Very clean. The antique furniture and fixtures were amazing. The entire hotel had hand painted walls. You must see the chapel and the library. The restaurant was very good. We stayed at the tip top room, if you can not handle stairs make certain to request a low level room.

United StatesThe grand wooden door into our room was cracked... big enough to look through. The breakfast room badly needs a renovation. Some of the large stag heads hanging in the breakfast room are falling apart and difficult to look at when eating breakfast. The breakfast experience was OK... should be great in a hotel like this. The coffee machine is too limited.
Staying comfortably in a medieval building is a rarity that is made possible here. The rooms are large and strive to respect the history of this ancient structure. The Schloss and grounds are romantic and fascinating. This is a great launching point for long walks and hiking in the surrounding area.

United StatesMy husband and I spent the week in Austria and wrapped up our tour by watching the “almabtrieb,” or the Cows coming home celebration in Reith Im Alpbachtal. We found Schloss Matzen and immediately booked! We live in Germany now, so I have stayed at other castle hotels, but this is one of the best ones yet! Absolutely stunning! Amazing staff! Very easy to communicate via message or phone and in person. We arrived early the morning of the Cow festivities and asked if we could just park our car there since we would be staying, the lady said no problem and even checked us in right away. Very dog friendly as well. We loved being able to tour the Castle and eat dinner right there overlooking the Castle & pond. Great Breakfast also included. Amazing accommodations. ❤️🏰

United KingdomIt was a bit tricky to get in to the castle but the instructions provided did work. Maybe slightly bigger signage at the gate would help - the local taxi drivers didn't seem to know how to get in. We would have liked to have some way of making a hot drink - a kettle or hot water dispenser.
Amazing building, well restored. The room was large and comfortable and warm (the weather was very cold and rainy). The bathroom was enormous! You need to be fairly fit to get about but that was part of the charm. The breakfast was excellent.

SwedenIt’s a small thing, but maybe some more flowers or green plants to the courtyards, it would make it feel even cosier. It’s beautiful as it, so it’s just a suggestion.
It’s beautiful, I love that they use the castle as a hotel, so that we can enjoy the beautiful rooms and surroundings. It’s a very unique feeling, and I can recommend it to anyone!

AustraliaBreakfast is basic and the closure to the castle grounds at the back. Wifi is OK if you venture outside your room.
We had been to this beautiful castle a few years back. It is as interesting and beautiful as we remembered it, however the access to the rear castle park was closed. This of course was a disappointment for us. Otherwise we would recommend anyone to experience being in a genuine medieval caste in such a wonderful natural setting. Also a walk to the town Brixlegg through an amazing forest worth walking, it only 30 minutes away where you have cafes and restaurants. There is only breakfast available but there is a nice restaurant adjacent to the castle.

United StatesVery few indications at the entrance of the castle ( easily getting confused with the nearby restaurant). We need a few more signs. Nobody can enter the hotel if you don't have a phone to call someone to open the door. Poor communications about where to enter, to park and what to do to signal your arrival. The internet doesn't work in most parts of the castle. The road at the bottom of the castle is noisy. You have to carry your luggage through a courtyard and in a narrow staircase, not easy !
An old "Chateau fort" transformed into a comfortable hotel. Lots of style and surprises! make sure you get a tour and see the chapel and the library. Our bedroom was huge and well equipped, except for the lack of lights. Bathroom was good too. Good breakfast.

GermanyEven though each of the few did their very best and were super nice, the hotel was clearly understaffed. They could not open the Café, reception hours were reduced and Sauna/SPA was only open in reduced/certain times and upon request which required some planing and flexibility.
The property is absolutely amazing and totally worth the stay. The views are beautiful, property is gigantic and loads of original touches. We barely saw the other few guests there. I would definitely come back for a further stay in summer or winter.
