I went there for the specific reason to try to practice some basic Russian. Most of the museums are very small although I enjoyed the archaeology floor in the main museum. Because of Covid many of the places I went to in the evening were empty. Generally people were kind if you are not intimidated by what seems to be a cold exterior typical of the region (because I am British I am not put off by this). I deliberately chose places where English was not likely to be spoken and despite my Russian being super basic, I got by. It was only in a Ukrainian restaurant where I felt the waitress was almost hostile -but probably she was just freaked out by a non Russian speaker. I did try a few of the modern style type restaurants/bars and as of March 2021 I found the Barrel the most interesting in terms of the menu.Guest review byRobertKazakhstan
