Wildhaus, by its location and views, is quaint, clean and stunning. Lots of hiking can be done straight from the hotel, or you can take the ski / hiking lifts up to higher ground and do mountain top excursions, with breathtaking views of the mountains. Definitely worth a visit of you are looking for peace, hiking and beauty. There are various hotels in the area, Hotel Sonne has a magnificent menu of Swiss specialties and very acceptable pricing. The Chasserugg mountain railway was a short walk from the Santis Lodge Hotel. It is a beautiful scenic ride up to a ski station and restaurant. A cable car travels from there to the highest point of the mountain where another restaurant with a log fire awaits. Santis mountain is half an hour's drive away. The hotel Schonau is a short walk up the hill serving delicious Swiss food such as rosti and fondu as well as pizza and other items. Alt Sankt Johann is just a small village, You must take the whole region (upper Toggenburg) as a whole. Fantastic scenery with views on the Churfirsten to the south and the Alpstein (Säntis) to the north. A paradise for walking and hiking with not too extreme montain hiking, and several cable cars that take away from you part of the effort of getting up. Recently, theme trails were added, like the sound trail - to be enjoyed before or after a visit to the "Klangschmiede" - Part smith shop where you can experience how cowbells are made (and make one yourself if you have time to take the course) part museum dedicated to the sound experience. Quite peculiar and interesting. And there are yodel courses too, just in case you want to get involved.... On a sunny day, take the funicular and then the cable car to the Chäserugg mountain. On the top there is a relatively flat 1 and a half to 2 hours walk on the high plateau around 2200 m of elevation (6700 ft) with breathtaking view on the Walensee lake just below your feet. From there you can do paragliding and daredevils with a wing suit can get some emotions too. Search for " Grinding The Crack" on Youtube and you get the idea. But walking and mountain biking can give you enough emotions too. Of course if you are looking for exciting night life you are not on the best spot. Small and quiet town offering relaxing stay, placed conveniently close to Walensee and Obersee lakes, one of the cheese factories (Appenzeller Schaukäserei), steel bobsled roller coaster (Kronberg Bobbahn). Exceptional food, clean and cosy rooms, great ambient atmosphere as there are so many little nice details here ant there but check in and check out was unpleasant. Lady at the reception desk was making faces and made an impression she’s disturbed and annoyed instead of making us feel welcome.
