We’ve been staying at lots of accommodations on our frequent journeys through Germany and Austria, but this place STANDS OUT ! It is not just the standing location and the villa itself,it’s the family who runs the place. From the reception to the dinner in their restaurant the owner made us feel so welcome. We had dinner relevant to a 5 star restaurant meal, freshly cooked and one of the best breakfast for a small place like this. Good luck to the people owning this place! We wanted quiet place to stay on our journey to Italy with comfort beds and we were stunned. All pictures cant describe an actual feeling. Entire Villa is right on the beach with nice green grass with sunbeds touching lake Wortherzee. Room was superclean, with luxury beds and nice lake view. Breakfast was tasty with mix of various types of sweets and classic food like scrambled eggs or ham. Staff was friendly and even called us in advance for a key for our room as we were checking-in at late ours.

Lakeside Living near the Austrian Alps

Located in the state of Carinthia, Lake Wörth is largely formed by glaciers during the Ice Age. It offers hot thermal springs, beautiful beaches and extensive cycling paths, all surrounded by picture-perfect alpine scenery. Wörthersee is abundant with culture, nature, history, and charming townships.

The region is a popular tourist destination in the summer, due to the Mediterranean climate and warm waters. In fact throughout the months of July and August the water temperature reaches up to 25°c, making the lake perfect for swimming and water sports. For the auto enthusiast, the largest Volkswagen and Audi car show in Europe is held in Reifnitz every year, usually in May.

Pörtshach am Wörthersee, situated on the northern shores of Lake Wörth, has attractions such as Werzer Arena and Burgruine Leonstein Castle. It is also home to the World Bodypainting Festival which is held annually in July. On the western shores is the picturesque market town, Velden am Wörthersee. It is a popular accommodation area for tourists with its crystal blue waters, green hills, restaurants, and cafés.     hello everyone we rested here with my wife and little daughter at the end of October. we really liked everything, from the time we were greeted (outside reception hours) to being able to easily access our apartments. our room was very spacious and clean, and the daily breakfast in bed is something unsurpassed, with a glass of prosecco the morning started perfectly)) since it was already the end of the tourist season, there were not many people and one night we were completely alone in the whole hotel, and the gym and spa area worked just for us. Thank you very much to the staff for such a warm welcome, we will definitely come again. I recommend everyone to visit.

    I loved this hotel! A perfect, extremely central location in the town, with its own car park and lovely beach/deck, on the lake shore. The hotel buildings are characterful and (not ostentatiously, but) stylishly furnished. Everything is immaculately clean. The staff - from the gentleman who directed me into my parking space, to the receptionists, to the restaurant staff - were all warm, helpful and courteous. Oh, and the breakfast was excellent and in a beautiful courtyard/garden location. And with very good coffee! I could not fault it. Thank you!

    We had a great stay at the Boutiquehotel. The apartment looks just like the photos and offers everything we needed. The selling point for us was obviously the terrace and being at the private beach right in front of our apartment, the view of the lake and the surrounding hills. I also enjoyed being able to take their SUP and just go for a paddle around the lake. Overall, an amazing stay, 10/10 would come back, Velden is also quite nicer in person than we initially anticipated.

    Sadly our hotel could not offer an evening meal as they had a group staying, but there are some excellent restaurants in the town: Pörtschacher Stüble, Sissi’s, Werzers Bootshaus (newly opened in May 2025) and Little Italy were our favourites. The young waitress in Little Italy was a lesson in how to wait at tables-such professionalism and always a big smile! We are in our 70s and less mobile than we once were, but getting around was very easy. The ferry runs all day; we spent many happy hours on it. You can buy a day ticket for about 22 euros and can hop on and off. We bought a weekly ticket for 48 euros and got our money’s worth! We loved it so much that I hesitate to tell people about it! Ryanair flies to Klagenfurt twice a week. From there a 15 minute taxi ride brings you to Pörtschach.

    The whole area of Worthersee lake is worth visiting. It offers a lot of activities for all (tourism, cycling, swimming, water activities). The lake is the warmest in Austria and its water is crystal clear and warm as the summer sea. All the nature around is beautiful and calm.

    Reifnitz is a very small village and easy walking distance from Seehaus Gaby. The Strandbad is lovely, with shade trees and sunshine. Swimming is good. We were there during the week and it was quite full.

    This was possibly the most relaxing break ever.

    This was possibly the most relaxing break ever. There is little else here except the fabulous Hotel Linde (and Vivamayr - a detox hotel where celebrities go). The situation right on the lake meant stunning views from the breakfast room and terrace; from the Seebar (Lakeside Bar and Restaurant); and from our balcony. Swimming in the clear water of the lake is a must. The food is exceptional with sushi and sashimi a speciality. The staff too are exceptional and couldn't do enough for us. A two-minute walk brings you to the landing stage of the ferries which ply up and down the lake during the day offering a hop on hop off service for 19 euros per person. Since we were staying at the hotel for 4 nights we got a 50% discount. For Gustav Mahler fans, another must is a visit to his composing hut, where a very knowledgeable curator will give you a detailed history in German or English. An absolutely stunning experience!

    I found everyone including taxi drivers , people in restaurants helpful and kind as I was travelling by myself. I went with the purpose of visiting the prisoner of war camp my father was in WW2 and visited the war memorial. The museum was well worth visiting and most helpful.

    Velden am Wörthersee is a captivating gem, easily my favorite lake destination in Austria alongside the charming Klopeiner See. Just a three-hour drive from Vienna, its accessibility makes it a perfect escape for a weekend or longer. The region radiates vitality, with its sparkling lake inviting swimming and water activities, framed by a picturesque backdrop that feels both serene and vibrant. The restaurants and bars here are a delight, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and atmospheres, from cozy lakeside eateries to lively spots buzzing with energy. Whether it’s savoring a meal with a view or enjoying the warm, welcoming vibe of the town, Velden delivers an all-around exceptional experience that feels like summer distilled into a single place.

    It was a lovely little town with quite a few restaurants on...

    It was a lovely little town with quite a few restaurants on offer on the main street and down by the lake, and a super market over the road from where we were staying. We ate at "Little Italy", lovely pasta. Had breakfast at the bakery by the train station - amazing food! The train station (5 minutes) up the main road was cheap and easy to use to go into Klagenfurt or the other direction of Velden. We booked all our train tickets using trainline app, which was easy too. It was a short walk down to the Lake which came alive in the evening. It also offered people with families a family friendly park to spend the day on the lake. One day we hired scooters and followed the lake until we found a place to swim. We stopped at Pritschitz and bathed in the lake, locals had their paddleboards / kayaks out.

    Not being too close to Vienna airport I probably should have...

    Not being too close to Vienna airport I probably should have planned for a couple of nights stay in Vienna either side of the trip, so that the travel to/from Worthersee was not too much of a headache/rush. The train journey was excellent, except, when our initially cancelled and subsequently delayed flight(s) eventually arrived, we had missed the last train, at 7.30pm, and the taxi fare was massive; so we only got to experience the train on the way back. The connections for the train were really good, and the views were amazing. Would recommend, but plan the stay around the travel.
