We travelled with 3 different trains from Vienna to Obertraun in order to visit Hallstat. Unfortunately, the transportation wasn't very convenient for us. One of the trains that we had arranged was late and we had to wait two more hours in order to get the last train to Obertraun. We departed from Vienna at 8:00 and we arrived to Obertraun at 15:30! Obertraun was very close to Hallstat. Hallstat is a magical place but next time I would prefer to visit it by car.Guest review bySophia - 10.0

Gosau had everything we needed for a wonderful, relaxing holiday - a grocery store, multiple restaurants, beautiful views, friendly people, and many trails for hiking, biking, and walking. We stayed in Hallstatt for 3 nights, using it as our base to explore the surrounding area. It was a good choice as the Boutique Hotel Strand we stayed in offers a panoramic view of the lake. It was so peaceful and tranquil sitting on the balcony and admiring the views. Staying in Hallstatt gave us the opportunity to explore the town in the early morning and late evening hours when it is less crowded with day-trip tourists. The accommodation had great view and the balcony was so Cousy, I could sit whole evening there to spend some quality time. The location is beautiful and relaxing. My kids enjoyed lot. Stay in beautiful Obertraun instead of the overpriced and crowded Hallstatt! We stayed 3 nights in a lovely accommodation Haus Edelweiss, and following the recommendations of lovely host Nina, we spent one day walking from Obertruan to Hallstatt. Along the way, we saw this stone path going up the hill and we went up (very do-able hike), and it led to a very beautiful view of Hallstatt! We then went down the other way and continued walking towards Hallstatt, explored the beautiful village and took the ferry (Euro 12/pax) back to Obertruan. Next day, we walked a loop from Obertruan to Koppenwinlsee. The walk was very lovely and we saw tiny red strawberries everywhere! There was a restaurant after Koppenwinslee but I think it was closed on Mon-Wed (please check), and other days open for lunch & dinner, so time yourself to make it in time for lunch/dinner. We were stopping so often to admire the scenery that we missed their lunch time! It is better to visit during non-summer to enjoy Austria.Guest review byRaySingapore - 10.0

Gosau is getting really popular among the tourist who want to visit places in Austria. Closer to Hallstatt, it offers serenity and options to hike, do rock climbing and ride mountain bikes. Bring cash!! Most places would not take the credit card. Also, plan to have your dinner early because nobody served food after 8pm, not on the 2 nights we were there (a Friday and Saturday!). Small town, 10 min from Hallstatt and lake, and 15 min from Dachstein Krippenstein (Mamoth and Ice caves, Glacier and mass of tracks...) Much easer and chipper to stay at Bad Goisern. You have in mind that everything is closed after 7 PM, so do shopping and have dinner before... or eat pizza...Guest review byBoris.FIsrael
