The Vatican

The world’s smallest state is also one of its most attraction-packed spots. As the centre of the Catholic Church, Vatican City is chock-full of awe-inspiring religious architecture and artistic treasures. Must-sees include the imposing St Peter’s Basilica – so vast that the Statue of Liberty could fit comfortably under its dome – and the mesmerising frescoes of the Sistine Chapel.

A huge collection of just about everything - much more than Versailles or Ermitage ... But the main thing is the one that they won't let you take pictures of - in Sistine chapel Michelangelo drew God from behind - showing naked butt. Bold move - not just by Michelangelo, but also from the Church's point of view for allowing it. Opens up a whole new chapter of what Church is about ...

Impressing architecture, massive collons, even though it was crowded you dont feel it since the area is quite huge and there's no rush or any kind of panic by the visitors. People travelling there by themselves of with families, whenever tired always may have sit on the cool marble stairs and ground under the shadow of the buildings. Recommended to everyone visiting Rome.

Get a guide who doesn’t bore you to tears and also stop letting so many people in at one time. Too crowded, couldn’t see anything. Despite warnings to not use your camera in the Sistine chapel and to keep quiet, it was full of people talking loudly, taking photos and generally being pains in the ass!

Basilica closed due to the Conclave. Museum was awesome, but tour guide moved us through the throngs of visitors so quickly we couldn't really focus on the amazing exhibits. Interesting to note, they keep the windows open without glass or screens. Very old school - we liked it.

The hostess, Morena, was warm, friendly, helpful, and in constant contact by WhatsApp before and during our stay in the apartment. The apartment was lovely, nice decor, and in a very good location. It was just a five minute walk to Cipro, Metro station. The street outside had a supermarket across the road, with cafes and restaurants just minutes away. The Vatican, and St. Peter's square was a 12-minute walk away, with the beautiful sights of Rome and the river Tiber just beyond. We would definitely stay there again.

We loved the apartment - it's spacious, clean and cosy. Also it's very close to the Vatican and the St Peter's Basilica. There's a supermarket down the street, it's called PamCity and has everything you need. The host, Arianna was very helpful and nice. If we ever come back to Rome then we'll definitely choose this apartment, it's the best 🥰.

After many trips to Rome we found the perfect accommodation, but also the perfect host - Gianluca. The apartment is in an excellent location, a few minutes from the bus station, but also few minutes from the Vatican. At the same time, the area is quiet and safe. The parking space is also within the building and is fenced. The apartment has everything you need for a short or long stay. Thank you to the Gianluca and we hope to see you again in Rome.

We stayed here three times during our Italian summer. The area is fabulous and this wee hotel has great rooms, and overlooks a fabulous secret garden at the back. It’s a family run hotel and everything is warm and welcoming. There is free breakfast and coffee and afternoon tea! There is a lift too! It’s very quiet too and you wouldn’t know you were in the heart of Rome. Feels very safe and the area is full of fabulous restaurants. Location is fantastic you can walk to the Vatican or the Colosseum - easy as

Location was really good with easy access to the metro, lots of food shops and within easy walking distance of the Vatican. Washing machine, fridge and hot plate were very beneficial. Air conditioner worked really well (apart from having to empty the bucket). Street noise was minimal and the building was secure. Price for an apartment in this location was good, as it’s not too different to the cost of a hostel, but you have your own space and amenities.

We had a wonderful stay in this apartment in Rome. It is clean, beautiful, and looks exactly like the photos. The kitchen is fully equipped and the apartment has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, yet the location is perfect – just about a 10-minute walk to the Vatican, Piazza del Popolo, and the Spanish Steps. Highly recommended!

I really liked the location of the hotel we stayed in It's only a 7-minute walk to the Vatican. The staff were amazing, friendly, and helpful. We received a complimentary bottle of win. Cleide helped us with all our quires and allowed us to leave our bags at the apartment all day free of charge as our night was in the night. So we were able to explore the city, not worrying about the bags.

check out the hotels for your ideal location, you get very good value for money from smaller hotels/ bed and breakfast/ guest houses etc. Use the hop on hop off buses, buy tickets to the main tourist attractions in advance, unless you like to wait in line a lot! Vatican is manic, I went in March and it was starting to get busy, I can imagine it would be very hot and uncomfortable in the height of the season.

If you take the time to go through the streets north of the Vatican you can find many small stores where the locals shop. As well as the popular brands and designer labels these streets are full of market stalls with lots of bargains and lovely small deli's and cafes that sell many wonderful local goodies. Great restaurants in this area too, well worth spending a few hours of the day finding a treasure or two.

  • Get a 48-hour pass on one of the "hop on, hop off"...

Get a 48-hour pass on one of the "hop on, hop off" sightseeing bus services. Many of them also offer "skip the line" tickets for certain sights. These tickets are worth every cent. There are tourists waiting in long lines everywhere, which will waste a lot of your time and energy. Rome is an intense tourist destination with much to see. Plan well, do research and be prepared to spend extra on special services. You will need at least 5 days to a week to truly see most of the major landmarks. Just the Vatican Museum offers so much that you could easily spend 3 days inside and still not truly see most of it.

As it's Rome there will always be tourists everywhere but DO NOT go with any tour group guaranteeing to skip lines, the queues are never as bad as they look. We were told a "5 hour queue for Vatican and the Sistine chapel" but if we joined a tour we can go straight in...for a €50 fee. We opted out and queued and were in and out of the Vatican, Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel within 2.5 hours all for a quarter of the price (student and EU citizen discounts). The same goes for the colosseum. Go at your own pace and avoid the scammers. The hotel had basic tourist maps which were perfect and we easily found our way. But we did find there were always less people between 12-1 as they had gone to find food by then.

The Colisseum and the Vatican are probably the main attractions, but there are dozens of monuments, museums, gallaries, fountains and churches that all offer a piece of ancient or modern history. Even the roads and walls and buildings seem to tell a story about one of the most preserved ancient cities in the world.
