Loved the location in the middle of the village. Property is a beautifully restored old house with a lot of character. Loved the beams and exposed stones. Owner very helpful.

Company information

I am originally from Vancouver, Canada but I moved to London to go to university. And, then stayed on working as a university lecturer and then as marketing director for a large city law firm. A holiday brought me to Slovenia and I immediately fell in love with the country and its people. And, thought why should I be working all my life in an office when I could be here. And, the next thing I knew I was learning to operate a hilti to take off the plaster. Besides renovating I love to explore and find out more about the history of a place. I spent most of my free time over the past 6 years travelling around Slovenia and the surrounding area's of Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary. So, I'm a very good person to ask for tourist advice. Also, its something I love to do, as one of the reasons why I wanted to get out of the office was so I could spend more time doing useful things. And, what could be nicer than helping people have the best holiday they can.

Property information

No one understands how I managed to fall in love with house or see its potential, given the sorry state it was in when I bought it. The house had been abandoned since the early 1970's and was missing half its roof, had no indoor plumbing or electricity and all the walls had been covered in a thick layer of Artex which was painted avacado green. Undeterred I began a 3 year renovation project to bring the house back to life. You have seen the tv programs about foreigners moving abroad to renovate...well of all those sorts of disaster happened to me and then some. But, I was constantly inspired and surprised by what I found underneath the plaster work...lovely larch beams, beautiful stone walls and hidden doorways and chimneys. I strove to restore the house with as much of the house's original character but with modern touches such as en-suite bathrooms and heating. Now that I'm finished I'm very excited to be welcoming guests into my home so that they may enjoy what I think is a very beautiful and cozy home. The garden is still a work in progress but my ability to keep plants alive is getting better. Next year I hope to renovate the barn.

Neighbourhood information

Kobarid is a small friendly town surrounded by the Julian Alps. Even in the summer its never to busy...though my friends in Tolmin...always say...wow, Kobarid is buzzing!! Buzzing might not be the right word...but there are 7 bars around the main square, all which serve local wines and delicious cakes. There are also numerous restaurants, from pizzeria's, to bbq grill places to the world famous Hisa Franko for fine dining. And, if you would prefer to cook there are 2 grocery stores and 2 bakeries in town. There is also a medical clinic, dentists, pharmacist, hair dressers, etc. But, the main appeal of Kobarid is the natural beauty that surrounds the town. The Soca River is a 5 minute walk from the house and their is an enjoyable and interesting historical walk that can be done around the river, which takes you to a place on National Geographics top 20 prettiest spots in the world. Or to get a better view of the valley you can hike up several mountains right from town. Or sign up for a tandem paraglide. At the very least, you should brave a rafting trip on the Soca or take a relaxing paddle boat trip in Most na Soci. The choices are endless!
