A fantastic little spot out of town so wonderfully quiet. Lovely welcoming dog, chooks doing what they do and a couple of steers that were friendly too. Photos of one of the steers, and an old sheep sheering shed across the road.

Absolutely STUNNING!! The bed and breakfast is situated at the top of rolling hills that overlooks flocks of sheep and cattle with mountains in the background. Extremely comfortable, and the food and drinks were generous and delicious!

Hopwood B&B was exceptionally charming, up on a hill a few minutes out of town with an array of land and sheep. Our host Leah greeted us when we arrived and had some helpful recommendations for us. We tried the new Indian joint in town and it was...

Hopwood Farm is a 2-hectare property overlooking the Papakai Valley, on the north-east outskirts of Taihape township. The area is a beautiful example of sub-alpine Central Plateau, suited to quality wool and livestock production. You are surrounded by pretty hill views and sheep covered pastures. On a clear day, you can see across to the high peaks of both Mount Ruapehu (north) and the Ruahine Ranges (east), as well as look over the town of Taihape (south-west). The current 1907 homestead at Hopwood Farm was relocated from town in November 2012. The separate sleepout building was added in 2017 and opened as a B&B in 2023. The private B&B unit is clean, modern and comfortable in all weathers, featuring double glazing, insulation and air conditioning. A generous self-serve continental-style breakfast is included, with gluten free and lactose free options available on request. The kitchenette has a bar fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle, but no stove top. Last, but not least, there are always home-baked snacks to welcome you!
Your hosts Leah and Rod moved to Papakai Road in 2023. They fell in love with the spectacular hill country views and the relaxed lifestyle offered by the property. They like to share the simple day-to-day activities on the farm with guests, like feeding orphan lambs, collecting eggs from the free-range hens, bird watching or the stargazing on clear nights. Their overall aim is to provide excellent accommodation and service at an affordable price.
Taihape is a great place to break your journey or use as a base for exploring the northern Rangitikei and Ruapehu regions. This small town is a hidden gem with everything you need to relax, including its own cinema, pool, medical centre, hair and beauty salons, good eateries and boutique shopping. We even have one of the only interactive squash courts outside the capital cities of New Zealand! Taihape has an interesting history and plenty of heritage buildings; the Museum on Huia Street is worth a visit. Come and explore our town! Just ask your hosts for more information or visit the Taihape Information Centre in Hautapu Street. Our region also has heaps of outdoor adventure activities to enjoy, like hiking, mountain biking, white water rafting, kayaking, skiing, trout fishing, cycling and horse riding. And don't forget gumboot day! Taihape is famous as the gum boot capital of NZ and every January we celebrate with a gumboot throwing festival!
