The breakfast was good and the area is quiet. We enjoyed the park around the river and the mill nearby. It is a bit out of Salisbury city center but it’s just a short walk, which goes through lovely landscape.

It is within walking distance of both the train station and the cathedral. We were also able to easily pick up the bus to Stonehenge which we enjoyed very much.

The restoration of Three Crowns, Harnham has transformed the former sad, disused, ivy clad Inn into a warm and welcoming family run guest house. The cellars have been made over to modern, en-suite bedrooms and in what was the main bar- guests can enjoy breakfast under one of one of the most elegant ceilings in Salisbury. How a lowly Inn originally came to be decorated with such fantastic Italian plaster mouldings and plaques still remains an unexplained mystery. Italian Masons working on the nearby Cathedral, did the work to supplement their income and pay for board (almost identical work can be seen in the Cathedral Cloisters. The date given at 1720 and it is certain that Italian artists were working in the area around the time). The alternative theory is that some of the larger mouldings were taken from Wilton House, during in the 18th Century - when a newer more elaborate ceiling was constructed - the plaster masons at that time reset these in the Three Crowns - possibly again as payment for fare. Many of the saved mouldings had to carefully be stripped of generations of layers of paint which had dulled the fine art and others remoulded from broken remains.
Renovations completed - the fresh looking Three Crowns Guesthouse Looks forward to offering a warm welcome.
