The Courtyard
The property was built in 1780 and was a merchants house before becoming The New Inn. The property has (although now sealed) passages in the cellar linking 39 with numbers 37 and 35 Market Street, which back in 1780 would have been the complete property standing alone, as a lovely red sandstone structure, To the rear of the property and the entrance for our guests is the original courtyard, as you can see in the pictures.
We have now lived in Kirkby Stephen for thirty years, how time flies, and we originally ran the shop as a tearoom together with bric-a-brac and whole foods and promoted wonderful live folk music as the acoustictearoom for 25 0f those years! We now rent the space which has become the shop of antiquity and is great for a browse and a trip down memory lane.... When you arrive in the apartment you will see our love of all things old and quirky, plenty to feast your eyes on along with books to read and games to play on rainy days. Dogs are also very welcome here and with all the marvelous walks on the doorstep, well you wouldn't want to leave them behind would you? There are also many places of interest on our doorstep and with the lake district just an hour away by car this really is a place to explore, ramble, eat, shop or just kick off your shoes and relax....We look forward to welcoming you. Penny & Paul.
Kirkby Stephen is a quiet market town set in the Eden Valley and boost of rolling fells with stone field barns sheep and babbling brooks. This is truly a place to unwind.
