Company information

Cragwood is run by husband and wife team Emma and Sean. We strive to provide guests with a comfortable stay, a warm Lakeland welcome and a tasty breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. We love the outdoors and as well as running the guesthouse we enjoy exploring the fells with our boarder collie.

Property information

Cragwood is a traditional three storey Lakeland stone terrace house built in 1894, with four beautifully decorated modern en-suite guest rooms. The two spacious king rooms ‘Skiddaw’ and ‘Latrigg’ are named after the mountains you’ll see from the window and the best choice for a longer stay or special weekend treat. The two smaller double rooms are south facing; ‘Walla Crag’ has a view over the roof tops to Walla Crag and Maiden Moor, and ‘Catbells’ has a yard view. Free on street parking is available for guests. The house is located on a quiet residential street in Keswick, just a few minutes walk from the town centre where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars, and ten minutes’ walk from stunning Derwentwater lake. There are a variety of walks to do from the doorstep…from all-day hikes taking in multiple fell tops, to more gentle strolls along the Keswick to Threlkeld railway line or around Derwentwater. Breakfast at Cragwood is generous and healthy, designed to set you up for a day on the fells or exploring Keswick and the surrounding villages. All ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible. Our Cumberland sausage and dry cured bacon are made from pigs raised in Cumbria. The delicious, highly praised sausages are made by hand and the bacon is cured using a traditional recipe by Keswick butcher Bomber (regulars to Keswick will know Bomber from Thomasons’ Butchers). Our black pudding is made in the next county by the family run award winning Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company. Our free range eggs are delivered by Sheila who keeps happy chickens at Scales Farm in the nearby village of Embleton and our milk is delivered in glass bottles by our milkman, Steven, based just down the road in Braithwaite. Our Darkhouse coffee is roasted in Keswick by Jiri who specialises in single origin coffees from around the world. Vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and gluten free options are available, please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

Neighbourhood information

Cragwood Guesthouse in Keswick is the perfect place for a relaxing break or an action packed holiday, and is the ideal base from which to explore the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Lake District National Park. Keswick town centre, just five minutes’ walk from Cragwood, has a great range of outdoor shops and a wealth of locally run, independent stores selling everything from local crafts to local gin. Keswick market, held in the centre of town every Thursday and Saturday, is well worth a visit and whatever the weather it’s fun to explore our art galleries, meet local crafters at the ‘Makers Mill’ creative venue, learn about our history at the Pencil museum and relax and unwind in our beautiful ‘Fitz’ and ‘Hope’ parks. Eating out in Keswick is an event with its great array of cafes, restaurants and warm, welcoming pubs; see the ‘eating out’ page for our favourites. After dinner you might like to watch a performance at the Theatre by the Lake, or catch up with the latest releases at our old-school, theatre-style picture house, Alhambra cinema. Most importantly do not miss Derwentwater, our spectacular lake surrounded by the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District (not that we’re biased!). Stroll down to it (ten to fifteen minutes leisurely walk from the guesthouse), walk around it, stand up paddle board or kayak on it, take the launch boat along it, walk the fells surrounding it…. If you’re feeling adventurous why not book an outdoor activity with our sister company Keswick Extreme and let our experienced guides take you ghyll scrambling, river tubing or discover with us the thrilling Via Ferrata or Climb the Mine. It’s best to book ahead for these popular activities! Keswick is an amazing place for walking, climbing and cycling; you can leave your car parked up for the duration of your stay and discover the fells and trails of the Northern Lakes on foot straight from our front door, or using our fantastic local bus service.
