David and Susan welcome you to Girraween Rural retreat. As owners and hosts of this rural five-acre property, we are excited to share it along with the improvements to make your stay enjoyable. As a background to your hosts, we were originally teachers starting off teaching Aboriginal children in both Numbulwar and Elcho Island located in Arnhem land. David spent several years managing an Art and Craft business on Elcho Island employed by the local Aboriginal town council. As such we have good grounding in Aboriginal culture we can share. At heart we are both ‘bushies’ with a love of the fauna and flora of Australia and what exists on our property. We also have two domesticated Australian dingoes that are quiet and respectful. The dingoes are only too happy to meet our guests and within a short time they will wander over to say hello. We would be keen to share our knowledge of dingoes including their history and origin, their innate behavioural characteristics and their biological make up that separates them from the domesticated canine. We have owned dingoes for in excess of twenty-five years. If you wish we look forward to giving you a tour of the property pointing out the various indigenous flora on the property and the Aboriginal uses of various plants. David has been a professional photographer for several decades and is willing to share any knowledge on photography that maybe of interest. You can visit David's website searching David Silva Photographer Darwin. For several years David has been photographing birds and has amounted a large library of birds photographed on the property. We are at your disposal to impart whatever you require in terms of local knowledge of places, fauna and flora, aboriginal culture, Dingoes, photography and other requirements. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
Girraween Rural Retreat is positioned in the heart of the Darwin rural area that is a mix of residential rural properties and an agricultural powerhouse producing tropical fruit and vegetables such as mangoes, rambutans, dragon fruit etc. Our property grows limes, pineapples, guava, pawpaw, cashew apples, bananas, and vegetables from our veggies patch. We are happy to share whatever is in season during your stay. The property provides several kilometres of well-formed walking tracks to give you access to the whole property. The bird life is abundant and we can introduce you to our domesticated dingoes. Seasonal bush tucker can be picked while walking the tracks. You have sole access to a lagoon swimming pool that adjoins our house. Further afield you have the famous magnetic anthills only three kilometres away and McMinns Lagoon 10 minutes drive away that has a circumnavigating walking track and a wonderful array of bird life with shade and seats to enjoy the scenery while having a feed. Another couple of kilometres and you can enjoy Girraween Lagoon and its paper bear trees and waterlilies. This lagoon was used as a backdrop to the infamous scene in the movie ‘Crocodile Dundee’ when the crocodile grabbed the drink bottle hanging around Linda Koslowski’s neck. Twelve kilometres from the retreat is the shopping hub of Coolalinga that provides the majority of services and shops you will need. There are three cafes and a restaurant. The Bellissimo Café provides traditional style services with indoor or outside seating. Palmerston city is twenty minutes from GRR and has all the services you may not find in Coolalinga such as mechanics, hospital and cinema. GRR is well positioned 86 kilometres to Litchfield National Park. Litchfield boasts three main waterfalls and fantastic swimming at Buley Rock holes and Wangi Falls. There is a café on the way and one at Wangi Falls. Kakadu National Park is 124 kilometres.
