Scattered across thousands of kilometres in the North Pacific Ocean, The Federated States of Micronesia span more than 600 islands, whose landscapes range from coral atolls to limestone plateaus and steep volcanic peaks. These islands belong to four island states: Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk and Yap. Pohnpei, the biggest island, is known for its ancient ruins, Nan Madol – a network of sunken basalt temples and burial vaults separated by twisting canals. Take a boat tour of the site to fully understand its role as one of ancient Polynesia’s most important political and religious cities. Similarly mysterious ruins can be found on Lelu Island, of the Kosrae state. Here, high basalt walls are hidden by thick vegetation in the sort of setting you’d expect to find in the jungle. On Kosrae’s main island, you can go hiking in the foothills of Mount Finkol. Chuuk, on the other hand, is a magnet for scuba divers, who come to explore the many sunken Japanese ships which litter its lagoon. Dive into these warm, tropical waters, where immense marine life has transformed the wrecks into artificial but beautiful coral gardens. Some 1,500 km west, Yap offers more diving and snorkelling, and a vibrant, traditional culture that has survived centuries of power swings. Take a tour of the island to see its colourful rituals, and large coins that are made of stone. With the exception of Chuuk, each island has one or two hotel resorts to choose from, with a handful of private apartments available to rent.
