The Dominican Republic is one of the most geographically diverse countries in the Caribbean, with white-sand beaches interspersed with rugged mountains and desert plains .Santo Domingo aka ‘La Capital’ is well known for its Zona Colonial, packed with architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries. As you stroll through this living museum, you’ll encounter ancient churches and the Panteon Nacional, where the country’s heroes are laid to rest. The city has a more modern facade, with upscale restaurants, shops and plazas located in the districts of Piantini and Naco. Nature lovers can find all sorts of wildlife on the island, with the Jardín Botánico Nacional, Ojos Indígenas Ecological Park and Parque Nacional Cotubanamá all known for their vast array of bird species. Thrill-seekers will enjoy swimming and sliding through waterfalls, with 27 to choose from at Damajagua on the northern coast. On the south side of the island, the sand dunes of Baní make for an unforgettable hike, with some reaching up to 35m tall.
