The Hospitality of the staff: Umit is a master of all trades, asl and you will be granted! From restaurant advice to excursions from money exchange opportunities to laundry, to you name it . There was not a question he would not answer a request he could not address. The breakfast was truly 5*. They even had a different selection at the buffet every day. The room was impeccable. Clean and with all that was needed. From a proper hair dryer to a fridge.

The madrasah was an easy 15 minute walk from the train station and a stone's throw from the east gate of Itchan Kala. The building is beautiful and it is kept so well by the owner who is very welcoming. The breakfast was varied and fresh and it was lovely to eat outside in the courtyard. The room was airy and bright and there was a fridge and kettle. It was the perfect location for exploring Khiva.

You cannot ask for a better place to stay in Khiva. Location is right in middle of old walled city. And such a lovely people who are managing the property. Food at breakfast was freshly prepared and really nice. They really helped us by providing every info, maps, taxi service and extra food for our train journey. The property is really nice, big rooms and lovely setup for a sweet and effective trip.

Khiva is an interesting place to visit however it is very busy and the sheer volume of stalls selling tourist stuff gets tiresome, your don’t get pestered unless you stop and look at anything. It’s relatively expensive to get in and then there are sites that attract additional fees once you’re inside the city walls. The ticket is for two days but not 48 hours, so if you arrive mid afternoon like we did, it’s only a day and a quarter. There is a distinct lack of information about the structures you can visit

It definitely worth to visit the Old City with its distinctive architecture. One thing you need to keep in mind - what you see is restored during soviet times, not original. Very few or original buildings were left from centuries ago. Also visiting the old city will end up quite expensive not only for local standards, but Western standards as well - entrance fee per person is $20 and that does not cover entrances to certain places and city walls as well, So you need to prepare yourself to spend $50 if you want to cover most areas, Also all the historical buildings are turned into shops or hotels, say thank you to Soviet legacy for that. You won't find anything authentic and historical there. Just my 2c.

Very impressive city, but charges for access to old city monuments make it more expensive than Bukhara and Samarkand. And reports of less tourists in Khiva than Bukhara and Samarkand are false. Was roundly ripped off by the Choyxon Tea Shop in the old city - worst polav I have had in Uzbekistan and worst service.

Its a very picturesque city that has been maintained / rebuilt nicely. Atmosphere is nice, but due to the tourist focus our experience was that the restaurant prices can be slightly higher than in other parts of Uzbekistan that we visited. For people that know Dubrovnik, Khiva has a similar vibe with less tourists (at least outside the main tourist season)

Khiva is an amazing old city, with many historic monuments and a fascinating culture. The old town walls still stand, separating ancient Khiva from the more modern city around it. It is a wonderful place just to saunter around and soak up the atmosphere, but it is also possible to arrange excursions out to some old fortresses in the desert, which is well worth it. There are, of course, the inevitable tourist boutiques and kiosks, but the level of hassle is low and there are many locally produced crafts on sale.

We stayed in Khiva for two full days.

We stayed in Khiva for two full days. It was just enough time to visit all the sights and get a good overview of the city. The walled city is approx. 400x600 meters, so it's possible to manage everything in a short time. It was a bit of a labyrinth at times, since many buildings (apart from the landmarks) look very similar. During our stay it was 40 degrees, so we tried to get out early in the morning, take it easy during lunchtime, then go out in the evening again. The streets are quite lively in the evenings and there are many rooftop restaurants which are open until late. Double check that they have actual menus with prices (we went to a place where the waiter was showing us the pictures of the available dishes on his private mobile phone, with no prices). Khiva has more of an "outdoor museum" feel than Bukhara or Samarkand. Also, the markets are more expensive here. A tour guide later told us that you can go down by 50% when haggling.
