What I liked about Ålesund is that it is a real city (population 59,000) with its own culture and not just a tourist trap consisting of hotels, cafés, and souvenir shops that exist soley for the sake of the cruise ships. Therefore there are several top restaurants in town (which are not cheap, however!) Very popular with the locals as well as out of town visitors. (Restaurants: Bro, Apotekergata No.5, & XL Diner) The historical district is extra-beautiful because of the famous 1904 fire and art nouveau reconstruction which adds special flavor to it unmatched elsewhere. Makes for some cute museums as well. The Aksla viewpoint is a manageable hike and well worth it (418 + steps)! Plenty to do for 2-3 days but a great place also to relax and hang out longer if you are in to boating, walking beautiful streets, side-walk cafés, local culture, etc. Easy access to Geiranger fjord and Troll's Road too!Guest review byRodneyUnited States - 10.0
There's so much to see and do in this part of Norway.
There's so much to see and do in this part of Norway. I spent a lot of time hiking on the islands around the town, and travelling on the excellent local buses, but the town itself is fascinating and has a colourful history which is well described in the central museum. It's a very friendly and trusting place and the population seem to be well integrated. And the bonus is that Norway is no longer as expensive as it used to be.Guest review byAnonymous - 6.0

Beautiful sea town with an art nouveau appearance of most structures. A good place for walking..admittedly we stayed here as a springboard to visit Gerlainger Fyord but it was worth it...we were stunned to see massive cruise ships stop for port calls unloading hordes of people..locals don't fancy this either as these people tend to leave their wallets on the boat..could have lived without that for sure..8/10 on the overall experience scale..glad we went.Guest review byCherryUnited States
