This is small town Latvia at its best: quiet, but varied, with interesting places around every corner. Take the time to visit the Valtenbergu Manor park and the County Museum in the manor house, with its collection of 1,300 mice! Skanākalna Nature Park at the edge of the town is particularly worth visiting with a three-kilometre trail down the Salaca river gorge, dramatic views, an echo cliff, a swimming place, and wood sculptures to delight all ages. If you are short of time and have a car, €5 allows you to drive through the park, but do walk to the viewpoints. If you are into cycling (bike shop in the town centre), take a ride down toward Aloja on the Greenway former railway trail, including a spectacular bridge over the Salaca valley. Easily missed at the southern edge of the town, beside the road bridge over the Salaca river on the road to Valmiera, is the Būda Cafe with a good range of food, open long hours from May to September.
