The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

Taormina is a fabulous city perched on a high cliff, with fantastic sights, nightlife, restaurants and shopping. There are good transport options with buses and trains from the Airport and to all other destinations on the island. walking around the town there are lots of level streets but also lots of slopes and high steps. We ate in many of the restaurants and would recommend Al Gardino which is located a few mins walk from our hotel. The Food in all the restaurants was delicious with each having a different pasta, fish and meats options. We walked through Parco Florence Trevelyan each evening and that is a must see either during the day or evening. We were in the area of Taormina for three days and could have used more time- because there are so many other places to visit as side trips as well. Lovely town - crowded in the evenings but we still were able to find availability at good restaurants. Besides the high end shopping there were some lovely boutiques as well. Wonderful bakeries and cafes. Cable car down to the beach. Many hotels have walking paths to town , but may have to walk in road a bit for some of them.Guest review bySarah - 10.0

There are a number of restaurants around the town and the food was delicious at each we visited. Beautiful setting high up on the cliffs.The Greek theatre was amazing, and views from here were spectacular. Great place to use as a base for exploring the region - Mount Etna is a must see/do, as are the villages of . Castelmola and Savoca. Found Taormina much more expensive, touristy and busy than other parts of Sicily that we stayed in.
