Look Beyond the Leaning Tower
If you are in Pisa then the first stop is probably to snap a memorable picture of the famous Leaning Tower. Arrive early and you just might get a chance for a solo shoot! Go beyond this legendary experience and discover a maze of ancient cathedrals, buildings and squares in this historic town.
From the Pisa Centrale Train Station, the 30-minute walk to the Campo dei Miracoli is along a pedestrianised street packed with shops and restaurants. If you head outside the touristy area you will start to uncover the atmosphere created from the some 60,000 students who study here.
Appreciate masterful art at Museo di San Matteo and Romanesque architecture at the San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno, San Michele in Borgo and San Paolo Churches. If your feet are tired, then hop on and off one of the site-seeing buses to get a different look at the the Piazza dei Miracoli or Cathedral of St. Ranieri.

A really lovely town with a nice pace of life. Never too packed or busy but with a nice vibrant buzz at the same time. Great for it's own attractions - the tower is quite beautiful, as well as the cathedral etc. The botanical gardens are definitely worth a relaxed visit, and loads of good places to eat or have coffe or gelato. Gets very crowded around the "Leaning Tower" area so arrive early before the groups arrive. Buy your ticket once you get there as entry to the tower is timed and limited to numbers at anyone time. Food is not great near the Tower. I suggest walking away from the area for about 10 minutes where the restaurants are less crowded and better food. You pay about 1 euro extra for a cold drink from the fridge in the main supermarkets (Carrefour express/Pam) Go to the little shops where it's cheaper. And DON'T FORGET to validate your bus ticket once you get on the bus even if you have brought your ticket from the driver. Machine is located at the front of the bus. If you don't its a 43 euro fine. Pisa actually really did pleasantly surprised me. as a solo traveller I have to say I really enjoyed 24hours there and I have made the most of it. Local people made me feel extremely welcome and were really helpful in answering all the questions and giving recommendations. It is worth googling best restaurants in town rather than staying around touristic attractions as they are a tourist trap. And those former, are exceptionally good.. . As I walked down the cobbled streets of Pisa and marvelled idyllic architecture ahead of me, I have lost myself in an exceptionally great winery- Enoteca - La Cantinetta which is family owned and takes you through a journey of local wines produce. The owner is very passionate about it and has a great knowledge about the wines in general. The L’Ostellino serves best sandwiches filled with local specialities- my personal favourite- Black smoky Angus rucola and pecorino which melts in your mouth with every bite. The Dolce Pisa which is just across the street, will serve you an authentic pastries accompanied with an espresso. Their desserts, especially, Cannoli are on a different level. You cannot skip Primo Pasta place that serves street food pasta and tiramisu is to die for!! Staff service is exceptionally good!
