Alpine Beauty and Lakeside Tranquillity
Set at the south-western tip of Y-shaped Lake Como, the town of Como offers wonderful views of the surrounding Alps. A funicular railway runs up to the village of Brunate from where you can see Switzerland on the opposite shore.
The peaceful location has long been a favourite with celebrities, but the town has been around since Roman times. In fact, 2 of its most famous sons – Pliny the Elder and Younger – are commemorated in statues on the façade of the 14th-century cathedral. The next door Broletto dates to the previous century, and even older are the remains of the medieval walls and Castello Baradello, sitting on a hill overlooking the town.
Much more modern in style is the Casa del Fascio, built during Mussolini’s rule. The streets between here and the waterfront are packed with shops, bars and restaurants, and Lake Como boat trips depart from the small marina.
The neighbouring park houses a temple-like museum about Alessandro Volta (another former resident), and around the shoreline is elegant Villa Olmo which looks across landscaped gardens to the water’s edge.
The Como accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury lakefront hotels, town centre B&Bs and cheap apartments near San Giovanni Train Station, which offers direct services to Milan.

Great place to visit with great views. Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. A small bathing area by a park. Ride the funicular to enjoy great views although the walk up to the lighthouse is not for the fainthearted as steep and hot in summer but worth the walk. A shuttle bus to the top is also available. What a wonderful place to visit.
What a wonderful place to visit. We were there with the family and we really enjoyed our visit to the top of a hill using the funicular. Food around the area was nice, shopping at Carrefour, good price. The ferry trip on the lake was superb, you can see all the villas, houses, scenery, etc. The bus trip from Como to Bellagio is recommended. Como is a beautiful city, there’s also the small Duomo de Milano and the others places to visit. the cable train will 🚊 take you up to the mountain. Once you are at the top of the mountain, 100 % sure it will take your breath away because it’s so beautiful to see the whole city from up there. Ferry tour to Bellagio is special. Beautiful very romantic place to visit. A walk along the lake is perfect to start with which lead you a cross the other side of the lake to the city centre and lanes of restaurants to dine in. I ate at a beautiful restaurant right opposite to lake which was very nice also there’s a nice Caffè Maya Como near Aérodrome to sit & have a nice Aperol :) . There’s a funicular to take to have a beautiful scenic view of the Lake Como. We stayed 5 days in Como.
We stayed 5 days in Como. During our visit we did a day trip around the lake with a rental car, visited Duomo, walked around the town and the shoreline, did shopping in Mercato Coperto and visited Brunate using the funicular. For pizzas we recommend Ox Como right next to funicular. Great service and tasty neapolitan style pizzas. The town is quite small itself, so it would be a perfect weekend destination, but it was easy to extend the stay to other towns and villages around the lake. Generally speaking the town is a bit expensive when compared to our previous destinations in Italy, but you can find reasonably priced places too, if you look around a bit. The lakeview is amazing especially from Brunate during the sunset. We also recommend the round trip around the lake with a rental car. Western shore has narrow town roads and traffic can get congested, but little towns and villages have beautiful shorelines and lots of nice shops and restaurants. For swimming we recommend Domaso beach on the northern shore. The pebble beach has grassy areas to sit and relax and when you enter the lake you can see beautiful mountains all around you. Eastern coast of the lake has many beatiful villages too, but you need to hop off the main road to visit them and we skipped the most popular places on our way back to Como.Guest review byPasiFinland
