Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills

Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.

The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.

Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.

Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.

    We only spent one night in Assisi which gave us 24 hours to visit and see the sights. My only regret is that we didn’t stay an extra night as I would have liked an extra day to shop and enjoy the town ambiance.

    Assisi is a cute city located on top of a hill in Umbria. Olive trees and beautiful views of the Umbria region surround it. The town is very hilly, so be ready to climb some hills. It was very hot when we visited in July, so be prepared for the weather. It is a very peaceful town, and it is common to see friars, priests, and nuns walking around throughout the city. My daughter calls it the "city of churches." A charming city that I would recommend to travelers who need a slower pace.

    Lovely architecture, great restaurants, but you need to be a good walker to negotiate this hilly area. Did not realize this was a religious pilgimage town so you might get swamped by flocks of nuns and fervent catholic tours.

    The town is absolutely delightful and so much to see. Would like to visit again but would need to be better prepared. Would have liked more informative leaflets and books to be available including well illustrated books. Online information on bus services excellent but unfortunately mid morning services generally absent. The one tourist coach/mini bus agency did not run services to other towns unless it had enough prospective passengers. We had evening meals at many of the restaurants, all very good. It was easy to get round the town.

    I fell in love with Assisi – unlike busy cities like Venice or Rome, it offers a completely different atmosphere: peaceful, quiet evenings, few crowds, a beautiful spiritual climate with charming churches, streets, shops, and restaurants – perfect for anyone seeking reflection and calm after the rush of other Italian cities.

    Assisi is peaceful and spiritual. It's setting is lovely and there is so much history. Saints Francis and Clare are inspiring and their presence looms large in Assisi. It is unique, different and worth visiting.

    Very romantic location of our apartment next to a vineyard which we enjoyed gazing upon as we sat at our patio table with a glass of wine. The location of the hotel was near Assisi which greatly facilitated our visit there. I was so upset at accidentally forgetting my AirPods in the room on departure. The helpful staff returned them to me in Australia by courier. I was most grateful.

The apartment is located very close to the old town (10min by walk) Breakfast is very decent, with special attention to any kind of food allergies. Room was clean and they were even more attentive With the small details than any other 4-5 stars hotels. Free parking in front of the apartment.
