The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centred around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and boasting limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood-fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soda drinks Pipi and Orela.

An amazing place to explore but very busy as the height of the summer season. I would get up early to read all the interpretation boards dotted around the city centre while it was quiet. Split is a small yet historic city. The palace ruins are beautiful and very worth the visit. Most of the people working in bars and restaurants are friendly and helpful, but some are totally rude - don't take offense, just be patient. It is a beautiful little town, well worth visiting, lots of history, stunning scenery and a lovely vibe. If you just want to meander about, you can fill a couple of days, if you want to make use of the beaches and go further afield you could make it a longer stay. Split is magical.
Split is magical. From the point at which you arrive (especially if you arrive by bus), it is pure magic. Beautiful and expensive. You may go broke if you are not careful as there are a lot of activities to embark upon. However, if you have the resources, please go for it. The Mediterranean atmosphere, historical sites, and lively outdoor culture are what brought us to Split. The Old Town is a maze of stone-paved streets, historic buildings, and squares, set against the sparkling Adriatic Sea. The Riva, the city’s famous waterfront promenade, is a focal point for social life, lined with palm trees, cafes, and restaurants, where every evening residents and visitors enjoy the waterfront and scenic views. The city has a rich, layered history: from its Byzantine and Venetian eras to Austro-Hungarian rule and its pivotal role in Yugoslavia and modern Croatia. Today, Split is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant cultural events, and immersive historical ambiance—making it both a gateway to the Adriatic islands and a unique blend of antiquity and modern lifestyle. Everything is within walking distance (if you like walking), but when it isn't you can easily book a day tour such as the ones we took to Plitvice National Park and Mostar, Bosnia.Guest review byKeri - 10.0

Split is a fabulous place to visit for couples and families alike. The little sandy Beach at Bacavec is perfect for safe swimming, sunbathing and sandcastle making! The old town has dozens of little streets full of cafés restaurants, shops, bars and ice cream parlours. There is a wealth of historic sites to see, not to mention the super yachts in the marina. The majority of restaurants where we dined were very reasonably priced, as were the Ubers that we used several times.
