We stayed in Nea Chora with the apartment right on the beacghfront which was ideal for a 20 minute walk to the Old Town. Buses there thogh were few and far between and we didn't seem to crack their routes or schedules. Taxis (when you could get one) were relatively cheap and we found everyone polite and helpful and the area not swarming with foreign tourist. It's the type of destination where you don't just want to go to the beaches because there's so much more to do - in and around Chania. Chania Old Town was absolutely brilliant-the town is beautiful, full of charm, and the food is fantastic. It’s also a great base for exploring other places. That said, I personally find a few days in a city are enough for me, as I prefer quieter spots right by the sea.
