We spent two nights in Kutaisi which seemed like just the right amount of time - we visited Tskaltubo, Martvili Canyon, the three monasteries / churches nearby, walked all around the city to see various sculptures, mosaics and street art, and visited the green bazaar. Kutaisi was such a pleasant surprise during our trip to Georgia. It has this calm, laid-back vibe that really helped us slow down and enjoy the moment. The city is full of history – visiting Bagrati Cathedral was like stepping back in time, sites offered stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. Gelati Monastery was closed for renovation but we saw it from the outside. One of the highlights was definitely the Prometheus Cave – it’s a bit outside the city, but totally worth it. The underground formations were incredible, and the whole experience felt magical. And their hidden Sanatoriums in Tsakaltubo brought us back in their history. We also loved wandering through the local markets and trying traditional Georgian food. The khachapuri and khinkali were so good – fresh and full of flavor. Hoegarden and Magnolia restaurants had some delish food every tourist has to taste! We also tried their tram to see the view from up, it was nice. Compared to the buzz of Tbilisi, Kutaisi felt much more relaxed and less touristy, which we really appreciated. The owner was such a hospitable man inviting you in his home, enyoying selfmade wine and cheese with other travelers and learning more of the Georgian culture. Also when I had to take the plane from Kutaisi airport to Istanbul he arranged a taxi wich in 5 min picked me up from the guesthouse. It was beyond our expectations - Nino and her family is extremely welcoming and makes you feel as at home. The view from the balcony is amazing and the property is so near the centre. We hadn’t have much time in Kutaisi, so it was incredibly convenient to get a shuttle from and to the airport, be offered delicious local snacks (and wine of course;) and a tour with a lot of stories about Kutaisi’s sightseeing.
