A jewel with historic buildings and charming streets, Inverness is surrounded by a typical Scottish Highland landscape. It is located 10 km from Loch Ness, along the mouth of the Ness River and the Moray Firth coast. It is regarded as the northernmost city in the United Kingdom, and capital of the Highlands.

Pretty River Views, Quick Visit: Inverness has a small, walkable downtown with a few highlights—the river views are pretty, the old architecture is charming, and we loved Hootenanny for dinner with live music as well as browsing at Leakey’s Bookstore. The Victorian Market was underwhelming aside from a couple of food spots. There are somehow literally no museums or libraries open on...
There are somehow literally no museums or libraries open on Mondays or tuesdays, which were the days I was stuck there as a travel layover. So I got stuck literally just sitting in a park in the rain twice for several hours waiting to check in to my hotel, as there was nothing else to do since I didn’t need anything from any stores or restaurants and no other indoor spaces or activities were open within an hour and a half of the city centre by public transit. There are also only two small, museums available even on other days. Inverness might actually have the worst museum ratio Ive encountered in the British isles.
