If it hadn’t been for a family wedding, I would not have chosen to visit Hartlepool. The town felt very run down, with many shops closed and little to do. It came across as a sad and struggling area. Unfortunately, we also experienced a couple of racial incidents, which made us feel uncomfortable. The main shopping centre (Middleton Grange) is not doing well, with a large propotion of the units vacant. Church Street, once the hub of the town, is now largely occupied by fast food outlets. Hartlepool is a charming and welcoming community with lovely surroundings and friendly locals, offering a glimpse into the warmth of British coastal life. However, our experience was unfortunately marred by the poor amenities at the flat we stayed in, which failed to meet even basic standards. A bit biased because I grew up there and left in 1988 but the town has changed a great deal over the years. The are around the Marina is the jewel in the crown with the Navy Museum and historic ships. the walk down to Seaton Carew is also to be recommended as well as the Headland. The delightful secret of Hartlepool lies outside the town, on the Headland, which is where the original town lies. Beautiful Victorian villas, bright and breezy promenade, terrific fish-and-chip shop with queues outside the doors, and a fascinating parish church.Guest review byAnonymous
