Marseille has many interesting and beautiful quarter, and a wonderful museum of Greek and Egyptian archaeology, one of our main reasons for the visit. But, especially at night, the town can have a sinister feel. I very nearly had my computer stolen from my backpack as we walked from the station, and Marseille is not a place where you feel it is safe to carry round your passport. Even the central areas of the town are disfigured by graffiti. Marseille is a cosmopolitan center; you will find there the history of a country (continent) in a nutshell, and the simmering traces of revolt are evident. On the other extreme, you can walk through a city of French grandeur, see the monuments, and stroll and shop on the significant and renovated quai. Been there now 2 times with 5 years in between, and the extremes only became more entrenched. A beautiful city ruined by graffiti and anti-social practices by recent arrivals. You go from slum to elegance to slum within 50m. City authorities have no answers to dirt and squalor.
